Hello,

When I was at my last track day I had a conversation with another 306 owner who gave me lots of advice of different bits and pieces.

The main one that concerned me was a comment around the oil sprocket. He said that on the earlier models the oil pump sprocket is just held in place with the torque of the bottom pulley bolt. However on the newer engines it is driven using the woodruff key.

I can't for the life of me remember which mine had (I think it was the older style).
He mentioned that you can fit the new 'woodruff' style sprocket to the older engines.

My questions:
> Can the new style sprocket be retro fitted?
> Is it worth while? he mentioned about the sprocket slipping whilst changing down on track?? (is it really an issue or no problem as long a torqued up correctly)

Stuart

I think most people recommend fitting the newer design, I've not heard of any failures but they must have changed it for a reason

Yes the new style can be fitted no problems it is a direct replacement, it's about £17 from pug so if you happen to have the engine apart yes it's worth changing for peace of mind. Thumbs up
EDIT* I've not heard of a failure in anger but they can be known to slip after a cambelt change presumably due to incorrect torque BUT something that drives on friction alone can't be a good thing.....

Yes you just need the Drive gear and key, Pain to fit as the belt and sump has to come off, the only time I have known them not to work is after a belt replacement, all the 205 1.9 and Mi16's use the same idea, strange as the 1.6's are key'd

I changed mine to the later design a few years ago on a previous engine. Yes

I didn't fancy taking the chance of it ever slipping. It probably won't as long as you keep the torque correct on the crank pulley, but I wanted the piece of mind that it was key driven. Wink

Thanks for the feedback guys Thumbs up

I think I will just check the torque for now, but if I need to do anything in future around that area I will get it changed

LOL

Think for the price of it (around £17) I'd rather fit the later design. Yes

I have seen several engine failures as a result of loss of oil pump drive - I change the oil pump sprocket to the later single piece type on all the engines I build.

You also need an extra O ring for the crankshaft, which the ones with the earlier drive don't require.

O ring slides onto the end of the crankshaft before the oil pump drive goes on IIRC.
Its a pretty thin looking little beastie and it's easy to forget about (Which I have done!) Dry

If it's been built properly then I wouldn't worry too much. When you think about it the only thing stopping the timing slipping out of place on the '6 engine is the friction of a single bolt through the camshaft pulleys (on the later design) although they can't slip beyond a certain point. On a lot of modern engines they have plastic pulleys and no mechanical keying whatsoever, purely the friction of the bolt.

Yeah, the woodruff key should only be for location and last resort, the actual drive should transfer through the clamped faces.

With the woodruff key though you do have that extra security. Smile

Have you seen how small they are? They're not designed to take much force at all.

Maybe, but the crank sprocket itself drives off of it. Yes

naah, as phill said its the clamping force of the bolt that holds it in place, all the key does is locate it.
