got taken by colin last night. ive pretty much given up on getting compensation from the other mechanic. the car is old and had a hard life and id rather not let hiim overcharge me again to fix it. i spent so much with him and its capputed (didnt help colin telling me he could of done all that for around a grand :s)

hes told me worse case senario 1200 for a new block (one that hasnt spent its life at silverstone) with my old ancilaries and he'll gauratee me it for 3 months.

im giving up on major engine modifications for now. colin showed me a pic of his 400bhp turbo rallye. kinda futile pretending i can make mine anywhere near as powerfull. its kinda out of my price range and mechanical abilities at the moment aswell. i know hell give me a good engine back so im happy to spend the money.

now me and my 3 mates have unit with a lovely level floor and rain stopping roof i can undertake more works myself (between us we have enough professional tools, engine hoists, welders, air tools etc to play with) . it was quite hard working on a sloped drive in the cold out of a single tool box and whats lying about in my dads garage. ill stick to my plans of lighter seats, windows and bonnet and maybe a cheeky 4-2 exhaust and oil intercooler. anythign past that is far too much effort and prang that i havnt done it properly

just gotta wait for a call and hear what the damage is

Turns out the OP had been stuffing his money into it to burn instead of fuel. Rookie.

£2,284 it says on the RRP, although that looks like it contains pistons/rings/bearing/caps, etc, too from the diagram, not sure though.

Will be a re-con then, nothing wrong with that though. Although, at £1200 assuming thats including removal of the old unit, reconditioning an secondhand bottom end, fitting and providing a new rad. That does'nt leave a lot of margin for providing new parts. What exactly are you getting? A recon bottom end? Or a transplant of a complete known good running engine?

Man I think you need to step back and look at the situation from out the box! You're piling so much money into that, plus it's phase 1 and everybody knows they're poo Whistle

removal and replacement of old unit with know second hand unit with about 80,00miles on it.few other parts and thats it. theres still headway in the budget if other parts like my ancilaries are found to be faulty and need replacing.

im sad a prefer the phase one. it just looks better, more retro (especially with the chrome 205 wheels). i get another 500rpm and no aircon. im piling money into it but at the end its still going to be better and alot cheaper than a brand new golf gti etc

new golf gti - 20 grandish, more if you want bells and whistles

306 gti6 - 700 quid
mr citreon specialist doing a ripoff of sorts 3500
spacers wheels and tyres - 500 (already bought these 1 year ago for my 1.4 306)
new engine+extras - 1200

total - 6100 for what may aswell be a new car.

yes i know what i could of bought with 6 grand. a car i wouldnt of loved as much and couldnt afford to insure.

ive always liked the phase1 306 and always wanted a gti and this is my gti. its staying Razz

Erm no, £6100 for a load of new parts bolted to a pile of rust. Believe me I love P1's too, but I'd never pile that much into one because it's ridiculous. For that kind of money you should be stripping the whole shell down, getting cracks and rust repaired and a full proper respray while you're there.

Any less and you'll just end up with a brand new engine and parts failing an MOT on rusty sills.

You get 500rpm extra with a P1, eh?

colin says i get the car back wed probly. combine that with my being off work till new year and ive got some fun to be had with it

As the engines coming out anyway makes sense to spruce up the engine bay, you usually find rust and it will stand out more on a white car anyway, also for the money you are shelling out I would have got an engine built at Lynx or similar and then dropped it in yourself with the hand of a few members off here, tis quite easy to change an engine in these cars, I'm sure the engine you will be getting will be ok, but it will still be secondhand and not reconditioned by the sounds of it, make sure you get new cambelt kit and water pump though, Yes

Not exactly the same league when it comes to price, though is it?

Oil pump rebuild kit, gasket set, head bolts, core plugs, valve stem oil seals, crank/gearbox oil seals will all be replaced as part of a proper rebuild. That little lot alone comes to over £500.

Then you will be looking at nearly double that again in labour for removal, rebuilr re-fit, and unless you are throwing in a grand or two for some uprated cams/rods/pistons whats the point? You will have spent £1500-£2000 on a standard engine!?

I think he's going the right way about getting the car running again by fitting a good secondhand engine, and if he had'nt been taken to the cleaners by the previous 'mechanic/bandit' we would'nt have batted an eyelid.
