I've what sounds like the same issue as Chris, here:
http://www.306gti6.com/forum/showthread.php?id=141610

Can anyone tell me if this is the little motor that controls the flap to direct air through the heater assembly?

I'm refering to the object in the upper centre of this picture:

Those photos were taken from the passenger side, looking towards the centre console from the footwell, under the dashboard.

To continue this busy thread, I've discovered that the temperature control is intermittent. Sometimes I'm able to control the temperature effectively and other times it only blows hot. It seems that it changes with the engine being turned on and off.

This suggests to me that the heater control unit or the flap motor are being 'shocked'/'reset' into life sometimes when I start the car. Increased likelihood of the heater control unit maybe? I guess I'll monitor it and test its operation in differing scenarios to rule out causes.

Probably the main heater control panel relay being a bit sticky, the one tgat often melts its holder in the fusebox.

I can confirm it's green and inside the cabin fuse box as mine melted recently. They can be difficult to pull out when they do this.
