Not allowed to fit one to my race car as it contravenes the regs, I'd be happy to knock one up for a paying customer though Whistle

What would you do with the exhaust? If either blanking the gap up in the back or fitting a rear diffuser isnt the exhaust going to just get in the way?

I can't see the exhaust bieng much of an issue, it fills part of the parachute area quite nicely all by itself, I'd be tempted to just sheet off all the areas around it. (you wouldn't want to enclose it as all the trapped heat would be bound to cause something in the floor to melt etc.)

Marine ply FTW. Saw several of the touring cars sporting it at Thruxton today.

In what capacity were they using it Dan?

I may have pictures. Will check later. The Honda's IIRC had 15mm thick marine play as a 3 foot deep splitter/undertray. One was painted, the other you could see the layers.

A Vectra which was having a new front end fitted after a smash had a large section of thin ply hidden away up and under the front bumper for aerodynamics.

It's great for splitters, they usually get trashed or wear away, and it's cheap and easy to form.

Could always do a rolling road before and after to see what top end speed results are between the new undertray parachute filled version and the standard parachute bumper.

    Joke.

I think the more telling figure would be MPG, as lets face it, how many of us are regularly sit near the limiter in 6th wishing we were a little more aerodynamic? If it does reduce drag you should see a small gain in fuel economy.

If you look at the links I posted earlier, the Aussie bloke gets an alleged additional 10% fuel economy by putting a better front undertray on his Prius - which already has a low CD.

I saw some posts on a VW forum where people were putting TT underbody in-fill pieces on their Golfs. If Audi can be bothered to produce the parts, they must have some sort of effect.

An extra 10% extra range would be welcome on long trips.

I agree, it does make you think just how much drag the 'parachute' effect rear bumper is having on our MPG.

Until this conversation started, it wasn't really something I ever thought about before. Crazy

Laugh my ass off sorry stan

As said on his link he done a before and after rest run. But in a priuse i cant see it costing too much but in a gti6 i can see it costing a fair bit more.

I might still look into getting something knocked up when i come round to messing on with the rear of my car but will be a couple of weeks yet. Still trying to find the best material to use. Something thats going to be light and not melt from the exhaust heat.

Not quite as much as you'd expect, the airflow stalls under there and forms an air dam anyway.

Maybe, but it has still got to be causing unwanted drag in a straight line surely?

Oh, it can be improved upon I've no doubt, but you don't have the parachute effect you'd imagine back there.

hmm i been keeping a close eye on this thread and i think its a good idea but the car will have to be flat underneath from front to back and be no more than 2.5" off the floor to have a real effect i belive and imo.

I have fancied making one for some time, but as I mentioned, DMN doesn't allow underfloor aero apart from a front splitter, and even that is strictly goverened as to how far the tray of the diffuser can extend back under the front of the car.
