Most aero mods are a comparative waste of money/time on regular cars, they sit too high for ground effect, have lousy drag coefficient and don't have the power to reach the speeds where aero comes into its own anyway.

Same as mine. Wink

I have thought about this issue in the past when the spare wheel gubbins was all taken out, it does create a void space before the rear bumper which must be producing a "parachute" effect to a degree. I just think that it isn't that huge a problem especially with a road car that you would need to combat it with any kind of mod.

I've thought about a full undertray for a while. Think a diffuser will look good if subtle but not do too much however the parachute effect could be solved just by drilling some holes in the back bumper. Will keep an eye on this though.

drilling holes if anything will make it worse, just cut the middle out.

I agree, although if you drill holes or cut the middle out it will look gash, unless some sort of diffuser was installed somehow. I know I wouldn't want to "cut" my bumper apart to be honest.

This is an interesting topic though, and I look forward to see if anyone comes up with a decent idea of combatting it. Smile

Been pricing thingd up and itd gona cost around £300 to do a full undertray with front splitter and rear diffuset what is far too expensive i think.
What about blanking the pocket where the spare wheel was with a plastic or aluminium sheet?

That's what I was thinking, being a Joiner I was thinking of just using a piece of 10mm marine plywood sprayed black, cut to shape and kept away from the exhaust a bit, this would cover my swirl pot and fuel pump etc, if it proved to be a benefit then could get some aluminum cut to the same size as the ply, the plywood would be free for me too Whistle

You can get a 3m x 1.5m sheet of that composite aluminum for about £100, not sure how heavy or rigid it is though Dunno

Seeing as you can get the material for free then Dave, you try it and post the results...Whistle

Question is though, once you've fitted it how are you accurately going to test it to see if it's made an ounce of difference? Do you have access to a windtunnel?? LOL

These sorts of subjects are covered here.

Especially:

Modifying Undercar Airflow Part 1

Modifying Undercar Airflow Part 2

These articles include some test results of experiments on road cars.

Based on these articles I am going to install the front wheel "fences" you see on a lot of modern cars including my wife's Mk2 Ford Focus, a factory Pug engine undertray, and possibly a simple flat plastic panel attached to the spare wheel carrier to reduce the parachute effect. To do this I was going to use 3mm black plastic sheet from ebay (though the rear wheel cover might need 4mm for rigidity). I was not going to use expensive stuff.

Even at motorway speeds there will be little real difference, but it might improve things slightly and it is a bit of fun.

Ferrari underside:

thread on a Honda forum about same subject, I might read it myself later.
http://honda-tech.com/showthread.php?t=2854103

it's just the rear bumper that I was interested in to try improve the parachute effect, if you want to improve the more technical side of it then theres not much point unless you've got a lotta money to waste.

I reckon its worth plugging the parachute. But making a proper diffuser is more hassle than I could be bothered with.

    This ^^

If you managed to smooth out the airflow and block up the gap before the rear bumper it would be beneficial to straight line speed but only up the top end. Yes

A proper diffuser would cost thousands to design and implement, and I don't even think you would see a 'real' difference on the track to be honest in terms of cornering ability. I am still interested in a proper neat solution to the parachute issue though. Smile

See if you can knock up a prototype and then post pics of it attached to the car. You never know, you could patent it and start selling them as a genuine aftermarket product. Smile
