I'd put aside a couple of grand. You'll know the cost of consumables, gaskets, cambelt kit, rings etc, then I think Phil charges £35/hour labour. Then if its just f**ked rings or stem seals it shouldn't be too much but if you've melted a piston or something you can add on another £500 for pistons, then machining costs etc. I paid him £2300 approx to repair and rebuild my engine...

Think so.

Pete can I ask why that engine failed if you say it wasnt his fault?

Hmmm, touchy subject, but basically the engine was mapped by another company, who adjusted the cam timing, which I believe caused the valves to touch as all 12 remaining valves had identical and consistent damage where they had all been touching each other. Long story short, engine builder made his excuses, I took the company to court, but failed to prove to a judge who knew nothing about engines that this was the only possible cause and so I lost the case. For reasons of libel/slander etc it's probably best I don't mention the company but Phil knows who they are and I would suggest you stay well clear if you need the engine mapping after it's rebuilt... The map Wayne Schofield did for me was miles better anyway to be honest.

They adjusted the cam timing without consulting you to see if there was any clearance for such an adjustment? That's very bad practice, have they been going s long time or are they inexperidnced?

List of results

Snetterton;

Qualified 13th out of 23 cars

Finished 11th out of 19 cars

please for my first race ever

Brands Hatch;

Qualified 16th out of 29 cars

Finished 13th out of 23 cars

Never been on track here before so pleased with results, could have been better but got held in pits after pitting under safety car, should have gone in earlier!

Silverstone;

Qualified 14th out of 26 cars

Finished 11th out of 22 cars

Please to have had a good battle with the car in front and only just missed out on getting in the top ten.

Castle Combe;

Qualified 15th out of 29 cars

Finished 11th out of 28 cars

Only ever done a 20mins track sestion here before many years ago so pleased with result.

Castle Combe (sports v saloons)

Qualified 13th out of 35 cars

Finished 11th out of 25 cars

again just out the top ten but still a great result

Mallory Park;

Qualified 12th out of 26 cars

Finished 7th out of 21 cars

at last finished inside the top ten, and had a great battle with a 206 RC (GTi 180) which we beat in the end!

Donington

Qualified 15th out of 39 cars

Finished 17th out of 28 cars

very disappointed with this result as again got held up in the pits after pitting under the safety car, so lost a lap! could have been so much better, learnt not to pit under the safety car ever again!

Oulton Park

Qualified 25th out of 31 cars

Finished 14th out of 24 cars

Qualifying was damp/wet, never been to this track before and went out on the wrong tyres! Happy to have got back to 14th after a Great race with Mike Nash in his 106 Rallye with him getting the better of me in the end but it is his home circuit Smile

Sounds like fun! All been well I'll be out next year. Although I've heard rumours that a french car race series could be on the cards...?! That sounds awesome!

yeah its been great, next year the big ones coming out!

would be good to see another 306 out there, we need more pugs to help fight the mass of clios that are racing! even though yours is the same colour as mine, might have to get the dulux out over night!LOL

yes the french car race series sounds good if it does happen!

I'm definitely going to pop down when you're at Brands.

I would say you might be joined by a red Rallye in the series at some point but we've got a long way to go first! Big grin

doh! They heavily pitted by any chance? Thats why mine were replaced. Dunno why mine were like that, looked like some detonation going on. What are you replacing them with? I bought Omegas last piston a bit back but special tuning might still have some, or Mr. Longman.

no too much piston slap and gudgen pins worn, bores badly worn!

so having a very slight re-bore, and new pistons made by CP which will be an exact copy of the ones I have just slighly bigger with rings that are readily available.

mine has the 406 coupe btcc bottom end so really fancy pistons ec and really hard to get and expensive!

Ah yeah, forgot you had a different bottom end. Custom made pistons? Mmmmmmmmm, that'll be cheap! Are the pistons ok then? Could you not use a new block instead?

Oversize pistons will put you above 1998cc, and therefore ineligible for the tintops...! I have my excuses ready already y'see!

re-bore is allowedSmile

pistons themselves are ok, but its getting the pins and rings and bores worn in the middles.

could use a new block, maybe do that, still deciding?

I was only kidding, would be silly not to allow a couple of overbores.

Is Phil rebuilding it for you? I'm sure you'd be able to get rings to suit and gudgeon pins can soon be made up, gotta be cheaper than custom pistons! I'd be interested to see the 406 btcc pistons if you have any pics!

A local race engine builder has it, and they said it was the best way to go. Pistons that were in it had no marking or makers name on them.

as you know nothing will be cheap which ever way I go, at least this way I know what I have if I need anymore.

not had a confirmed price yet, but prices from Phil and Longman were crazy so this way will be cheaper by far.

Between 6 and 700 would be decent ballpark figure I believe, decent reliable ones don't come cheap :/ Similar ballpark for rods.

What sort of prices did you get from Phil and Longman? Was that just a price to rebuild your engine without knowing what was up with it? I was just going to use Wossner 86.5mm pistons when I re-re-rebuild mine.
