Just looking on spoox at them now.

TBH from the bits ive read about the two diffs Im leaning towards the quaife. They have a good rep and the way it handles is more progressive. I'm concerned that the tran-x lsd will be too hard to get used to and create steering issues.

Lots of talk about plate diffs now though, would it be stupid not to get one and get a standard lsd?

How much do new diffs weigh in comparison with the standard item???

tranx from Miles Thumbs up

they can be set up to suit you to not have such a hard bite (ramp angles and preload etc) so shouldnt cause issue with steering etc.

plate is a standard LSD...

not sure on the weight, but it wont be much more, the benefits far outweigh any extra weight gain.

hmmmmm, just read a bit more. the atb quaife is the one i want. being put off plate diffs by the servicing / setting up, and they seem more difficult to get used to.

Don;t believe everything you rear on the web, Plate diff's are much better than the ATB,
Half the weight for a start and servicing is all depending on how much you use them, just like a clutch, Some people get 200k from one others do 50k for example.
I have loads of examples of happy customers, I;ve supplied a good 50 of them over the years, and only one older Gripper diff has been serviced in 5 years of use.
I find ATB's worse for steering than plate's.

I'm one of miles's happy tran-x customers. Mines in a high powered 205 with no PAS and its bloody amazing. It is on the softest pre-load setting with 45/45 ramps. Steering is fine and it doesn't clunk and bang at slow speeds like you read on the net. Best mod I've done to the car!

Lightly set plate is far better than an ATB ever will be.

This is very true, I recently stripped and inspected a tran-x for my brother, I believe it had done around 15k on road and track and the plates were hardly marked. Needless to say they went back in and i'm sure they'll happily do another 15k +

I bought an ATB for my sprint car 2 years ago without doing enough homework, when the diff is "working" i love it, it has got my lap times down BUT on some corners it's like its just not there, I have to cheat the car to make the diff "kick in". 100% love it in the wet though!

But in a straight line the ATB drives BOTH wheels

what - does a plate diff only ever drive one? is that why people describe them as pulling you across the road in either direction?

anyway - on the track on sunday i noticed that on long seeping high speed corners i was squeeling all the way round whereas a 106 and a 205 with LSD's didn't squeel at all. Would it be that a wheel on mine was losing traction and all power going to that so i was just skidding straight forward rather than powering around the bend???

no mate the atb switches the power to the wheel with most traction so when you turn left the right wheel will have the most drive and visa versa but in a str8 line both wheel take the drive.

whereas a plate diff can be setup with varying degrees of slip, in a standing start launch (or heavy throttle applications when turning) they will lock both wheels together.

an ATB will not do this if you spin one wheel, you'll just sit there spinning as the dude with less power and a plate diff pulls away into the distance Thumbs up

Doh I'd say they are good, if you understand their limitations and how they work.

I do, I just think a plate type would better suit the use the car is going to be put to from now on.

cheers for all the advice - i have spoken to tran-x today - told them it will be used in hillclimbing and as such dont want it too snatchy.

They recommended 30/60 ramp angles and lightweight (rather than fully inter....)

I'm 90% there with being convinced that this is the way to go, one thing i have been thinking about though,

say you are hammering around a hairpin, slidding out a bit, understeering, and you hammer the throttle, the diff locks both the front wheels - is this not going to cause bad understeer?!?!?

lastly, i presume a good peugeot indy could fit it?
