Has anyone apart from Gti6girl done this? I'm looking into getting it done and the prices I'm bieng quoted are horrific, it seems it's not particularly straightforward. If you have any info regarding what slave cylinder is suitable etc. that would be much appreciated.

We use an ap racing slave unit which was machined in to the box a little. You will also need a rallye pedal box and loose your servo which makes the braking pretty shit

When I spoke to A B Motorsport about it they reckoned £400 odd to machine the gearbox to take the slave cylinder. That seemed a bit steep. Do you know exactly whats involved?
I know the AP Racing triple plate clutch is about £900 and the slave cylinder is about £300.

The pedal box is bieng ditched anyway and so is the servo so I know I'll have to get physical on the middle pedal from now on.

I suppose it depends on what slave you are using as there are many types. On mine a plate had to be machined to go on the back of the unit and a little off the box where it was catching. Andy baker made my pedal box for me, but i rhimk my braking is due to standard discs and pads

For what reason would you want to do this conversion?

Because I want a seriously uprated clutch, as I plan at some point to race the car and the standard setup won't last long under that kind of abuse. I'm going to a bias pedalbox system anyway. The AP clutch can be rebuilt pretty reasonably by sending it back to them, so long term it will work out more cost effective to go that way. I had thought about upgrading to Piper 320 cams at some point down the line, but they said that because lowdown torque was so low in order to get the car off the grid you basicly have to put in about 5000rpm then sidestep the clutch! This will kill off the current clutch arrangement in no time, so I was planning to upgrade that side of things beforehand.

The pedal end is easy and if you run a pedal box is even easier, You can run a remote servo if you want as well which helps.
I;'d have a look at a BE4 box on a 206 GTi etc as thats got to be the easiest way to fit one or just use the AP bearing with a couple of pipes coming off of it

I used an ap twin plate in my old paxo and the pedal was heavy but ok i extened the gearbox arm this helped alot.
I now use a helix 7 ¼ race clutch in my 205 with a be3 gearbox and a custom release bearing and the pedal is fine the bite is harsh but it will be even with hy set up.

Just stick a V6 in and you'll be halfway there Razz

If you get the box side sorted then there are a few cable to hydraulic setups about if it helps Smile

I have a BE4 box I can take a picture of, but for those that oknow 205's, its just like a BE1 but with a slave cylinder instead oft he quadrant, IIRC some early BX's had the cable directly on the arm like this.

also some partner vans had a cable setup in the same place as the hydraulic cylinder.

Wouldn't it be better to change the standard clutch every 3 or 4 races at £100 a time?

Sure
Still going to install, bought the parts this week from USA, must receive next week:
61-8002 - Tilton hydraulic release bearing, 1,60" tall, 44mm bearing contact (right diameter for the 7,25" clutch) - 320 US dollars
74-750U - Tilton master cylinder kit (with reservoirs and remote kit) - 80 US dollars

Remember, I use a ML5T gearbox, the right is to measure the space available for the release bearing, know how tall it can be.. It varies with the flywheel, the clutch, and gearbox used.

If you use a push-type clutch in the std 215mm flywheel and a BE3/BE4 gearbox, I can measure it for you tomorrow. My car is without gearbox and I have the BE housings of a broken one

if I'm correct with a BE box you can use a BE4 casing from a DW8 in a Partner on an XU engine, these do use a hydraulic as well as cable clutch so there are off the shelf O.E parts to do the engine end.

not sure how you'd get around the pedal end due to the position of the servo, but probably mount the master inside the cabin above the pedal.
