Hi gents

Back from a day at Bedford, it was epic but the s**tty 195/45/16 Toyo Proxe 4's completely died....(loads of tead but zero grip)

So I'm looking at my options, will a 195/50/16 still fit? (toyo 888's) or could I even push up to a 205/45/16 and then run Yokohamas?

I'm struggling with options so any suggestions would be great,

Cheers

Road tyres just don't have the stiffness in the tyre walls, buy some R888's they're a decent option to begin with.... The problem these days is the cost.....

As above, the toyo proxies are great for the road but on track they won't handle it.

Are you able to step down to 15's? As the cost of r888's come down a lot then.
If not stick with the 16's and try the r888's or another option try the Nanking ns2r in 120 tread wear, great things being said about them. Have just got myself a set for the astra. Worth a try!

Federal 595 RSRs are great for a beginner track tyre. They're not as quick as R888s but are a lot cheaper and if you ruin them, it's less of a fuss.

Thanks guys, I had so little grip it was embarrassing!

I can't go down in size due to brakes but r888's look pretty decent, are they dry weather only? Are they road legal?!

Cheers

R888's are a road legal tyre.

They should fit, depends on the shocks you run. I have a 9" (IIRC) spring which are run all the way down means that it fouls on the shock adjuster ring.

There is no issue with the rear unless you have a cambered beam

I've bought a set of Federal 595 on DemonDan's recommendation, so I'll wait and see how they fair up.

R888 and A048's are so expensive that I wouldn't bother running them on the road, buy another set of wheels and chuck the R888 for the sticky stuff

I ran through a set of front R888's in less than 1k of road and track use. I nearly cried

Try some AD08R tyres from Yokohama.

Superb on track and are also very good on the road (road legal), quite stiff tyrewalls.

Not cheap from memory when I last bought them, but I wouldn't consider any other tyres after having run these. Haven't tried R888s mind.

the Yokos are cheaper than the R888, should get a lot more than 1000 miles from an R888 unless its purely track work and you didn't check and adjust tyre pressures to suit.

A friend of mine running a V6 205 got about 4k miles out of some part worn R888's and they're still legal.

Ok excellent thanks guys, the car is running Bilstein B8's with eibach Springs, does that mean I should stick with 195/50 or could I push it to a 205/45?

I've noticed the rear has marks on the liners where clearly tyres have rubbed on the inside!? How would I be able to tell if my beam is standard or not? (It's yellow with red arb's from what I can see...)

From searches on here previously it's had lightweight flywheels (that smashed) as well as lightweight aux pulley so I have no idea what might or might not have been done!

Well do the back wheels look at an angle towards the car, with one more of an angle than another

It shouldn't be, unless the beam was rebuilt with camber machined into them, but you would have equal camber on each side.

If the beam hasn't been rebuilt then it will be shagged by now so probably worth rebuilding especially since you are doing track days.

You'll have no issue running 205's on the front

You can put some verniers (or even a spanner) around a torsion bars and see what size they are.

The ARB is the single bar inside. You'll only be able to measure that by pulling a flag off and measuring. Not a tricky job at all. Get a head bolt or ford wheel bolt (or any bolt with the correct thread).

The rubbing on liners is possibly due to a/the beam being knackered and having camber. Unless it's had incorrectly sized wheels on at some point or someone's not attached the liners correctly. If suggest having a good look around and seeing if yours is a goodun.

I was just looking at Rsr's from Federal, nice tyres, good reviews etc but 205 narrowest fitment, will that not rub like a b**ch on 16's?

Nope, they fit fine on PR 1.2s with no rubbing (I'm on coilies and no plastic arches though)

The Dunlops I run are wider and there was some rubbing there I had to deal with.

As above, I run my coilovers on the bottom of the thread (GAZ GHZ) with 16" wheels and it's close but I have about a fingers width of space.

Well I've found the federals for £75 a corner fitted locally so I'm giving them a go on a 205/45/16, I just hope they don't rub!
