Ever since I fitted the race battery the car has struggled to start. Obviously this is kind of expected with a smaller battery but it does a really slow first rotation, then suddenly kicks in.

We were thinking it could be the starter motor on its way out?

We've never had to use the jump pack as it has always started, just sometimes after 2 rotations.

Battery is behind passenger seat so approx 1.5m. of 170A

Hmm, should be good, what battery is it and what's the voltage drop look like when it's cranking?

If you try it with a jump pack and it makes no diffrence it rules out the battery and points to other problemsThumbs up

If the HG is going wouldn't you expect it to turn over at a normal speed but not fire due to the condensation?
This doesn't rule it out but the HG itself doesn't cause slow turning over on the starter motor does it?

It's only done it since we changed the battery, before then it was absolutely fine so I don't think it's HG. Plus there's absolutely no mayo in the cap (although I know that isn't conclusive).

Mine cranks a bit slowly too on a race battery. Never bothered me though as it will always start, i like the fact it takes a second or two of cranking before it fires as it gives the oil pump half a chance to get some oil round the engine, that may just be my backwards logic though. LOL

Really? It's normally a small seepage that stays in there as condensation isn't it?
If the cyclinder was physically full of water the HG wouldn't just be not sealing it'd be not there! Surely there'd be other symptoms before that stage?

I'm not saiyng you're wrong I'm just asking?

This sounds like a case of maybe bad earths, if the head gasket was bad enough to half fill cylinders with water you'd have other symptoms while it's running. I'd start by cleaning all the earths and go from there! Thumbs up

I'll have a look at the earths. When we moved the battery we connected back up to the original earth by running a cable back, I wonder if the connection is not that great

Just put the orginal earth to a good spot on the body and earth the battery to the body near where it's bolted in...

A new starter motor will help. I replaced mine recently, was 14 years old and covered 174k. The improvement was noticeable. It turns over a hell of a lot quicker and sounds healthier when cranking over compared to the old starter motor.

Long skinny undersized battery cables on crap connections would be my guess.

Is the engine standard or higher compression? Mine was always fine with a standard engine but when I put my new engine in with higher compression it was sluggish, but then it did always start. I changed my starter for a diesel starter which was brilliant but I couldn't live with the additional weight so took it off again.

Like I say, probably 1.5m of 170A cable to shouldn't be too bad.

Think it might just be the battery is tired, started 100% with the jumper on it. Possibly not getting charged enough by the alternator

It's 3 metres if you've took the earth back forwards LOL:

Have you earthed the battery locally? My earth is only 12 inches long from my battery in the boot
