Im getting vibration through the steering wheel at motorway speeds, and have done for at least a few years now. Flooring it tends to makes it worse. It also seems to want to pull very slightly to the left when I toe it, I dont know if that's of any significance.

So far I've changed ball joints, tre's, tie rods, steering rack, driveshafts, P bushes (vibratechnics), front wishbone bushes (motaquip), hubs (incase of bearings or ovalling) and the wheels (now on TD Pro race 1.2). I had them balanced today (again) and one was out a bit. Didnt seem to make any difference. Also it's been tracked and ive checked tire pressure.

The steering rack was knackered as were the dampers and the car is feeling a hell of a lot better but these vibrations are driving me to the edge of insanity.

The only thing I can come up with now is if the brake discs are warped. Im not getting any significant judder under braking but would a warp cause the calipers to shuffle enough to cause these vibrations?

To be honest im all out of ideas. I wanted to make this car decent again one last time before I move on but its just not happening. Im open to any ideas and suggestions because im pretty stumped now to be honest Sad

You might be onto something with the brake discs.
But are you 100% about the balancing? You would be surprised how many people cock it right up
What about the driveshafts? Fairly new or unknown?

A warped disc or one that isn't sat perfectly on the hub would cause what you are describing. In my experience when it is discs causing the problem the vibration tends to be a lot less when actually braking.

Other than that I'd say Elliot could well be right with it being a driveshaft issue.

I watched tbe guy balance them earlier. Both ran 0.

Drive shafts are brand new from J and R cv joints.

Just went on a run with my cylones on the front. Feels better but still there. Could it be the extra weight is damping down whatever is causing this?

Check the subframe mounting bolts are tightWink

Get a 18mm socket and breaker bar on them, 4 on the big flat part of subframe at rear, 1 each side above driveshafts, you can get to these with an extension barThumbs up
Also check the 4 13mm bolts that hold the front subframe mount to the chassis.

If its pulling slightly when you boot it I can't see it being brake discs if I'm honestNo

Also have you checked engine mounts?Dunno

Try putting the car in neutral when driving down the road and see if it still does it, if it doesn't its likely it's drivetrain related, if it still vibrates its something that's turning with the wheelsSmile

Thanks for the reply dude. I can confirm I didnt hang of the subframe bolts when I put it back on. They felt pretty loose on removal to be honest. I didnt disturb the mounting bracket bolts but I will cbeck those in situ tomorrow morning. Do you know what the correct torque is for the big subframe bolts? Or shall I just get the breaker bar on them and gett them damn tight?

As for engine mounts the bottom mount is powerflex and looks ok. I did check the top mount and it seems solid. Didnt remove it completely just took the arm part of whilst supporting the engine. Its been replaced before as the original collapsed underneath.

Cheers, Chris.

When I replaced the hub assembly both sides I was very diligent with that. Also I had the whole front end up yesterday and ran the engine in 6th and checked for any disc run out by sticking my head in the arch and focusing on a point on the ground whilst in line with the disc. To be honest both seem fine. Im up for changing them anyway if this subframe bolt idea doesnt work.

Been for a run. If anything its worse. Ok so ive had the wheels balanced and put them back only to make it worse. It has to be these discs not seating properly on the hub or they're warped and causing the wheel to not seat properly?

Lol i noticed. Its got to be the disc if the subframe hasn't made a difference. No play in hub, bearing, driveshaft or steering rack. Yet you get a violent wobble at bout 68mph

Sounds like the wheel itself might not be seating correctly even if all you've done (more or less) is taken it off and put it back on again. Are you using spacers at all? Make sure that the face of the wheel where it sits against the disc is clear of any dirt or corrosion, same with the disc. While you're at it, remove the disc and make sure it's also clean on the inside face where it meets the hub. It doesn't take much dirt or corrosion on any of those mounting faces to cause a vibration at speed.

Is this symptomatic of an elongated hole in the hub iirc from reading posts years back? I think they said it was the one the ball joint bolts through thats over time wears out and elongates causes the above issue's. Worth a look surely.

Just been having an investigation with my step dad whos an engineer. Offside brake disc is running out 3000 inch. But found a worn spigot on the pro race. Off side is over 66mm in diameter now. We swapped a good one from the back wheel on the front to see if it makes a difference on my journey home.

Just drove home with two seemingly reasonable spigot rings on the front and the vibration is still there. Whole car feels like a complete pile of w**k right now.
