I'm making my 6 into a track car and since I want to shed wait but keep some of the creature comforts, like not dying like a dog in the car when it get's slightly over 8 degrees, I want to install windey windows instead of the sliders that some boys run. Does anyone know the weight difference between the electric/windey window setup?

Also how hard is it to change the setup over from one to the other?

Don't know the weight. Bud its easy mate just a straight swap. If I remember I had to drill a couple of holes for the mechanism though. 15 minute job though.

Just don't break the glass retaining clip for the side, they are a bit brittle.

Good stuff. Next question. Anyone have a set of windey windows for sale?

If you're doing it for track the other advantage is that you can remove the door cards and put in some flat ones without having to worry about where to fit the window buttons.

Few kg saved, plus less wiring to go wrong, plus you should be throwing away the glass and riveting in Lexan anyway Yes

Yeah I've thought about the lexan option but everyone melts in their cars when they do this and I do want to use it on the road sometimes so it's not a total track car. Can you get thermoformed lexan that you can use on the standard window mechanism

You can, but you wouldn't want to. Even Lexan isn't that hard, and will soon be horribly scratched if you wind it up and down, which is why you'd generally put sliders in instead.

Hmmm. I've seen ones with a "Hardcoating" upon further investigation but it doesn't way how hard they are compared to standard. I really don't want to go down the slider route as it just makes it too much of a track car really. I'm just wondering if there is easy weight to be stripped without really compromising the practicality too much.

That can wait till a later date I think, I'll need time to decide what I'm going to do

I'm going to say 75/25% towards track car but still going to be doing about 1500 miles (estimated) a year on the road so that's enough time to p**s me right off.

You know what I mean! Sliders just don't let the car cool down at all, plus I have to open the door to get my McDonalds in the car then!

Yeah mate I was being a nob, I know what you mean. Sliders are loud and rattly and annoying, if i were you I'd keep the glass, fit winders and make your own door cards.

The quantities I buy burgers in I generally have to load through the boot anyway, so that's never been a problem.

See, was that such a hard answer to give? LOL

I'm getting lexan for the rear windows as that is nothing really, got a fibreglass bonnet on order aswell since mine is mangled, so just easy stuff to shed the weight on. I'm trying to find a lightweight sound deadening carpet to fit in the rear aswell if anyone knows for anything?

Saying that I'm going to be bolting a load of steel scaffolding inside the car soon but that is justified weight. I'm preparing to be the next Pebbles

Only the end result. Not the handling of an ocean liner that led to it....

I was in the same boat for a while, wanting to keep standard windows in mine to stop me melting, but it doesnt matter anyways. You go out on track, and need to be fully clothed (arms and legs covered) and your not allowed windows open. So you generally die in the car anwyays Yes

Also, notice that youre going SC, this generally turns your car into a furnace Yes

Yeah, I'm going to be on the hunt for someone breaking a boosted car so I can just pluck the engine straight off them. I've got about 2k burning a hole in the bank at the moment so just waiting for the right engine to come about.

I've heard that the SC does increase the cabin temp, which was another concern. I'm just going to hold on and get some Rallye door cards and windey windows. Keep the glass and keep it comfortable, if only when I drive it on the road.

I didn't know you weren't allowed to open your windows on tracks. Whats that all about then?

Same reasons you have those nets over rally car windows, to stop your arms and legs flailing outside and getting crushed off if you roll.

I understand the rally car nets, but if you do roll one of the first things to go is the windows anyway. At least your arms won't be outside when you roll the first time

I'm going lexan side and rear soon. Well next year probably. Seems daft not to tbh, was thinking windy ones, but the weight you save is bugger all really. Might as well have a big crap.

The thing to remember is that these rules aren't made up by the organisers, but by their insurers. If they say windows shut, then it's windows shut. Lexan also won't shatter like glass will.

Someone buy those hardened lexan windows and see how it goes from there. See if it's worth my time and money!

Well I'm going to be carbon covering the rear quarter panel inside, can you run window winders with the flat carbon door cards then?

As in: "Did you see how badly he Pebbles'd it up going into that corner?!"

Or: "Oh poor bugger, Pebbles'd it right into the barrier"
