But that sign is readable. Just because it's a font size out doesn't equate to speeding does it... Plus it's 60 there so I'm going to assume there is a hazard, slow moving traffic or road works ahead so you shouldn't be speeding in the first place. What's the world coming to when people are let off with speeding due to font size? EVERYONE who drives are aware of the limits and the consequence if they chose to disobey.

Why is it, road signs have to be a certain style as do number plates, if they cant do what the traffic rules say they have to be then too right people should not be done for it, whether its readable or not is not the point, point is the law states we have to not speed and signs have to be a certain style as like number plates.

So what you are saying is they can break the law when we cant, two way street in this country and its their own fault for not having road signs legal.

Iv not been done for speeding, but rules are rules and both sides have to obey them, even politicians that use their wife to get away with it.

So this warrants speeding?

'Incorrect sign'

'Correct sign'

last week the speed camera van that goes around the fort william area got pulled over by the police because it had run out of mot 6 weeks previous.

so everyone that's been caught speeding since, by that van are getting off with it because the van shouldn't have been on the road

Im not saying its good they got away with speeding, they should get done but if the inforcement has not done their part by the book then they dont have a right to do the public even if they were speeding, thats the law. The law maybe an ass but thats how it is.

Its all about having a level playing field, then its a fair cop as they say. I know if i was doing the correct speed then get done for speeding just because their radar was not calibrated id be p**sed.

Speeding is wrong but everyone does it no matter how much they say they never have.

Im not saying it warrants speeding, people would have seen it and know its 60 but choose to speed. What is wrong is how thin the 60 is compared to the correct one. If it was raining with bad visability then the thin style one will be hard to see when going around that speed. There is a reason why signs have to be a certain style.

I have to say I agree with Beez here, the law would be first to jump on you for a number plate which was perfectly readable however isn't the *correct* font and therefore is illegal.

Same applies for their fonts IMO. Yes

Yeah but their fonts on signs don't have equipment designed specifically to recognise the letters and numbers like ANPR cameras on the road and those in fuel stations. There is a reason why plates are supposed to be a certain format.

It's not about having an excuse, it's about the limit not being legally enforceable.

Clearly there isn't an excuse as the signs are perfectly readable, but that doesn't change the fact that they are not valid and enforceable speed limit signs.

This. The difference is that a human can clearly read a road sign with a different font.

Also exactly this. No-one is saying that it excuses their speeding, just that if a technicality can get them off a few points, then great.

I'm kinda torn on this one. Yes if you're speeding and get caught, tough crap. However, if someone told you that all you had to do was complain about the font and you'd lose those points, I bet you would.

Number plate laws were around before ANPR existed, so I don't think that really stands up. I can see why the plates need to be that way for ANPR, but it doesn't explain why the law existed in the first place...

It existed before that for the likes of normal Gatsos and such, which were good enough quality to read a standard plate, but didn't have film or lenses good enough to read plates in small font or stupid brush script (remember those?).

Either way it's to stop you making your number plate unreadable, which is fair enough. If someone hit you and drove off, you'd be p**sed off if they had a silly number plate you couldn't read.

Agreed, however the point still stands.

If we as motorists have to obey the laws (as we should), so should the people creating the laws, thus creating a right and proper playing field.
If law makers were lenient with the people who must abide by them, then fair enough it wouldn't matter as such, however because the laws are straight down the line with severe punishments then I'm just as pleased to 'catch' them out just like they are when they 'catch' us out. It works both ways. Yes

Yup, I think I'd agree with that. It's not about the actual incident so much as the principal.

But it's not as simple as that. I believe since 2006 they have been in discussion to have this font within the law too. They say it's clearer than the other style. I think some lawyer has got wind of the discussion and saw it as an opportunity to line his/her pockets and enrage people through media.

I think this particular sign has been used from 2008 onwards but only from November 2012 you might get away with speeding fines.
