It would appear i've killed my bottom end whilst doing a track day.

I believe this may have been due to oil starvation or surge. it is an anticlockwise circuit could this contribute to starvation or surge?

Luckily i have a spare engine. But I am wondering whether a dry sump may be a worthwhile purchase.

Any ideas gents?

I've done a few trackdays on anti-clockwise circuits and not had a problem with oil surges at all. I suspect your issue is something other than that, don't forget the standard sumps are baffled to begin with.

What oil were you using at the time? And when you say you've 'killed' the bottom end, in what way exactly?

I did reverse trackday at knockhill in July. Starvation was not an issue for me. It could just be bad luck, what sort of oil temps were you seeing? As oil starts to shear at around 120 degrees......

117,000 miles.

As i say its not the end of the world cos i have a spare engine sitting on about 80,000 miles.

Probably is just bad luck. Out of interest - is the oil pick up on passenger side or drivers side of a 6 engine?

It's in the middle really but slightly to the drivers side as the engines not in the middle if you get my drift? You can see how the pickup lies here:-

Could you have been a little low on oil in the first place? As no doubt can guess from the suggestions already, 16v XU's can be sensitive to oil level and end up surging.

Just an engine stand I'd guess. Can get them from Machine Mart etc. Smile

That's an interesting bit of kit. Have you fitted that to a 6?

Not yet but I will be if I ever get around to finishing my project, I have fitted them to friends cars though and they work like a charm. I'd reccommend a 4 pint version, you know how they work?
