Right. Theres too objectives at play here.
Firsty post head rebuild my car is nice and chilly and runs lovely,
Although the fans seems a little erratic, sometimes im not sure they are working 100% but it's an intermittent issue so a bit of a pain.
Obviously I'd must prefer to have some confidence in them and am aware that a SC will require slimline ones anyway.
So i figure I might as well get it all set up sooner rather than later.
Basically then:
Is it best to utilise the standard system?
Electrically speaking?
Or, is a seperate fan controller the way forward (This seems better as the current setup seems a bit meh anyway)
Next, question I need 2x 10"?
2x 12 are too big I guess?
Best way of moutning these? I'd rather not f**k up a nice new (expensive) rad
Finally what brand is recommended? SPAL are good no?

Last question, How much will my bum sting from all the above???
Your sage opinions/experience are much appriecated

I run slimline fans on my track car for no other reason than I wanted to free up some space to mount an oil cooler. I have iirc 2x 12" fans mounted directly to the rad (air con removed) It's a marmite thing IMO, but I've mounted them using them mounting cable tie type things that attach through the rad fins, the fans are solid in place and provided you use the little rubber pads will not harm the rad at all. I have just wired them into the existing wiring and with having the air con removed I've bridged the pins in the air con condenser plug to allow me to manually start and stop the fans if required using the old air con switch. It's not hard to do and world ok, the only problem I've ever had was a dodgy relay connection which once cleaned up has been fine since. The fans are cheapie eBay jobs but have been fitted for about 3 years now and touch wood are still going strong. Any questions just shout up! Thumbs up

I've got 2x10" ones on mine, got them from CBS. Worked fine for the last year and a half.
Mine use the standard relays and wiring but i don't trust that so i'm going to get an independant controller at some point in the future.
When running full speed mine bring the coolant temp down fairly quickly, at low speed it will slowly creep up so i did similar to jeffers and wired in a manual switch so i can keep them on high speed when sat in traffic etc.

I also used the through-rad tie wrap type things, no evidence of damage so far, my air con has been removed and i am using an alloy nissens rad.

If i was to get again i'd be tempted to try 12" on the standard rad.

EDIT:
These are the fans on mine.
http://www.cbsonline.co.uk/product/10%22_Electric_Cooling_Fan_FAN10

Here you can see them fitted.

Hope this helps. Smile

Cheers for the pic!
It looks to me that you can fit 12 inchers in there JUST. So j might give two of those a try.
Interestingly a 12"fan flows twice as much as a 10" Shock

Anyway.
What i noticed earlier is the fans are basically s**t at cutting in.
What i think is happening is it occasionally misses the first speed setting, if that makes sense
It was only getting up to 98c earlier give or take bit the way it was doing it was just inconsistent

Soooo
Seeing as im getting new fans and that decided already.
Id like to know more about the revoltec controllers if anyone can help.
Mainly: How are they wired in?
Do i need a degree in electrical engineering to use them?
I assume the use the existing fan controlling temp sensor?

Secondly
How configurable are they?
And is how is it even configured to you connect to a pc or something???

Obviously option two is to just spruce up the standard system and wire in the fans.
If so, going by my issue, i assume i would need to buy the follwing to get it up to scratch.

New fan sensor. Cant remember if its blue or brown......
Three new relays for fans

Anything else?

Yep deffo something not right,

Decision no 1 to be made now is,
Do I:
Attempt to fix the standard three relay system
Note: not cheap seeing as the relays are 30 quid each...... (WTF?)
Plus the "Fan Sensor" for good measure

Option 2 is to get a Revotec fan controller ( f**k knows how these work though, There are two equally confusing types

Still none the wiser as to a whether two fit however I thinking based upon Prism's kindly supplied image, Yes? Looks tight though, Suppose I could run a 12" main one with a 10" second?

Ive got a similar setup as jaffers just works no probs.
It takes 5mins to bridge the ac with a couple of slim spade bits small piece of wire bridge pins 1 and 3 for fast or 1 and 2 for slow fans iirc. Quite nice if you see a traffic jam coming up, been paranoid ever since i boiled the HG quite nice to have the button right there. Also check out the multi plug lower right hand side of the rad for corrosion.

Just did the maths and the rad is 607mm wide so two 12" (305mm) spal/revotecs should fit with just over a mil of hang on either side.
edit:
You can get 11's too as a halfway house..

i had problems with my fans on and off a years since i got low boost install done
luckily i was never sitting in traffic, and i knew to watch my temperature

i ended up spending £80 on one of these, fitted it myself
soldered wires and heat wrap wires to make look nice

recommend them as a last resort Yes
love being able to set fans to kick in at the temperature i want

I believe I am running 2 x 10" SPAL fans on mine. Thumbs up

Cool cheers for that mate!
Im considering one tbh. 45 quid ive seen the m22 ones for!
I would prefer to work out what relays i need and try that first purely to maintain dual speed etc.

Edit:
Cheers Stan
Would any of the charged lot be able to measure the depth of the fan if possible? theres a few types of spal etc

iirc it was a m22 adjustable thermostat that came with the Revotec fan controller i bought
think it was ebay i got it off of

they come with instructions on how to wire them up, i took a live from inside the fuse/relay box in engine bay. Have all the wires hidden.

only problem with fitting it in there is you might not have the space... Rallyes seems to have more space in relay box than the Gti6s i have seen

edit:

m22 Yes

That's nifty.

I wonder if my S40 does that or is it a more advanced feature on the better ones?

I would imagine it would Dan, I think it's a fairly standard feature, wouldn't have thought it would be restricted to the upper models. One thing it does do is get rid of all the usual fan gubbins like the relay box and Bitron unit etc which tidys things up nicely.
