Morning,

It's MOT day and the garage have just called saying its failed on the ball joint and stop light switch.

Can anyone advise how easy these are to replace, they've quoted me £80. I know I can get a ball joint for £17.40 on ecp but not sure what there like to fit also I haven't got the lightest idea where the stop light switch is found.

price wise after labour and buying the bits it's about right but it's a really easy pair of jobs. balljoint = 3 bolts, whack old one off, new one on, job jobbed

brake light switch = upside down jobby in the footwell but you won't even get dirty. it's located within the metal steering column surround

Thanks Ricky, is the ball joint as simple as wheel off undo bolts and replace?

Also does this look the right part for the stop light switch http://http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Peugeot_306_2.0_1998/p/car-parts/car-electrics-and-car-lighting/electrical/car-switch-and-car-sensors/?464735001&1&ddcfc0ea45aa9b7516548ee3bf7ce8716ccf2833&000415

You need to loosen the pinch bolt in the hub too.

i think it's right for the brake switch

balljoint you just loosen the bolt (16mm or 17mm i think) and smack the wishbone free from the bottom of the hub. you'll need a balljoint splitter and give it a good smashing. having said that i once did it with just a crowbar when i was stranded

you'll waste an hour or so of your life but you'll save £60 Yes

but im a tight arse! especially when tax is up in a few days and 3 advisorys on tyres which i'll have to replace and then sadly putting the car up for sale.

the ball joint and switch came to £16.07 in the end as 'ecp' have extended there 31% off offer so really thats a saving of £63.93 to be percise!

I'd rather take the engine and gearbox, exhaust and rear frame out of the buggy than p**s about with rusty balljoint nuts and siezed pins in the hubs LOL

Sometimes it's a 5 minute job, sometimes it's a lump hammer, chisel, and a sack full of blue air.

The £80 bill isn't bad for a garage quote IMO.

I thought £80 sounded good and you know it's done right and guaranteed. Just think some places can charge £100+ just for an hours labour.

    You can say that again.

Any job I have done on mine has ended up in tears and more hassle/subsequent jobs.

It'll be going in for new tyres after anyway so I'll get them to check that then. It wasnt a bad price to be fair but if its a simple job as said above and with the parts reduced then why waste the money for someone else to 'enjoy' fitting them.

They won't need to track it. For some reason I read it as you having a TRE changed as I had been looking into them this morning.
