Any ideas if other any 306's use a smaller reservoir that will still fit into the gti6 master cylinder?

How easy is it to move the brake servo / master cylinder down by 1/2"? I get the impression it would be difficult

Yes i know i should buy the right one but i got some advise that it would fit but it doesn't because of the reservoir.

You know a lot about these things - why will it fit an S16/xsi but not a 6.

I presume the reservoir sits lower on the former?

How big is the hole the reservoir sits in? could you tap it out and then install a remote reservoir?

Yes i am thinking of something like this as a last resort.

If it will fit an s16 then surely i can get it to fit a 6 with a wee bit of work. There must be something that can be swapped I'm sure.

As I say above it was cheap so making an effort to try to make it work is worth it for me.

If it doesn't work then hey ho.

Ok I went to th scrappy today and found a reservoir that off a 406 that looked like it would sort things out. It was shorter but deeper and should have provided enough cleareance to get the strut brace on. Took it the the counter an the simpleton guy says to me 'I'll not sell you that unless you take the master cylinder cos i'll not be able to sell the master cylinder if you take the reservoir'.Crazy Crazy

I tried explaining that they are separate parts but he wasn't having it - told him to ram it and left it the counter. He will never find the car i took it off anyway so he just did him self out of a £5.

Had a look at all the other 306's he had in the yard and all the reserviors are identical as Welshpug says. What I don't understand is how it will clear the reservoir on an S16 and XSi but not a 6Dunno

Could it be that the cylinder is shorter/smaller on those cars which means the reservoir sits slightly further back?

I should have taken a few when I was trying to fit earlier but now the heavens have opened.

If it drys up I'll get it back out and get some snaps.

I can get 3 of the 4 bolts on. The 4th is in line with the bolt hole in the strut mount but sitting up about 20mm above the top of the strut housing. I may be able to pull it down using a longer bolt but it will be pushing the res up the way.

I might try taking the res off, fitting the brace and then putting the res back on( will probably need to bleed the brakes if i do that and don't have the time or inclination to do that today.)

It may also work by putting the brace on in reverse, but the brace would need the strut hole widening in order to fit down over the dished washer thing that makes up the top of the strut assembly. If that makes sense.

there's only 3 bolts in a 306 top mount.

You should never use a bolt to "pull" something down, it should sit in its correct location before bolting it to hold it in place. Yes

I would say the strut brace you have there is the wrong one for the car.
I have an E-Tech one which is good, or you could always go for an OMP one, but it's best to use the correct part for the car. Smile

Yes but this brace uses 2 bolts per side.

hence I'm talking about 4 bolts.

I've come up with a plan.
Might work , might not time will tell

Proper strut braces which are meant for the vehicle will be fitted with the same amount of bolts that the manufacturer used in the first place...

By removing one bolt either side you are weakening the system not strengthening it.

Why not just buy a strut brace in the correct fitment? Unsure

Fair enough you got it cheap, but all this p**sing about with changing reservoirs and what not will surely cost more/take longer than buying the correct part in the first place.

They don't do much anyway, so I wouldn't bother personally......

I don't really agree with that as such, I definitely felt the difference after I fitted mine. Yes
The front end seemed a lot more planted to me and definitely an improvement over standard. Smile

I take all your points and greatly appreciate your help.

I did check fitment hereSparco
and yes i realsie it states that the reservoir will need moved on some models but got advice from another member who thought it would fit and looked at another thread involving thesame brace which never mentioned this problem so I took a punt.

If i could get a reservoir to fit, it would cost about £5 from the scappy. Total cost of about 1/6 of what they are new for a lightweight alloy brace made by a reputable company. I'm on a buget so that would be a win for me.

Moving to a remote reservoir would be too much hassle I agree, at that point it will go on the bay. Nothing ventured nothing gained.
