Ok, I realise I might get a little bit of flaming for asking but the reason I say budget is because its a road car that I drive limited mileage in, and I think the capabilities of the car probably outshine my driving talent so I don't see the point in spending £600 on a car that cost £1000!!

Anyway, can anyone rate the Spax VSX kit, the Koni stuff or similar, I'm not talking about Raceland Coilovers here, and whether these cheap upgrades are worth having at all over the standard stuff.

I do also like the idea of a lower stance, 30mm at the most though.

Koni/Bilstein + Eibach FTW. I wouldn't call these "budget" either - just less adjustable than top of the line coilovers, which for the road is not really needed, arguably.

Spax had quality control problems some years ago and are allegedly much better now, but I would just go with the above.

Or, for an "upgrade" as what is on there might be 12+ years old by now, is to go with new OE replacements which on a GTI-6 is more than good enough for road use. In the past I had cars like Golf VR6 and Audi (non-turbo) quattro Coupes and saloons which needed Koni/Bilstein/Eibach ££££ to make them handle properly as the OE stuff was so squishy rolly polly. A 6 handles straight out of the box.

Ahh right thanks, It already has OE replacements front and rear but I would like it to sit a little lower, the B4 dampers and Eibach springs come in at about £200 for the lot so that seems very reasonable.

Do the oe dampers before ok after a small drop? I might be able to get away with just springs. I changed the springs on my previous car to Apex 25mm jobbies after good recommendations and stayed with standard shocks, but the ride was very bouncy and it didn't handle well mid corner if you hit a dip etc so wouldn't go down that route again!

Yup this is what ive done and it feels far better than the coilovers i had on it before. Not saying there isnt a case for getting b4's though - i will do this year probably - a little extra firmness would make it spot on but for now its just fine.

If I'm going to the effort of taking the front struts off then I'll probably do the struts and springs at the same time.

Whats a Hybrid ARB then?

And there's something about £150 for a set of coil overs that doesn't fill me with confidence!!

Why not. A set of b4's on the front is only about 110 quid. A hybrid arb for the rear beam is one of the best improvements to the suspension ive experienced. The standard item just isnt thick enough and allows for to much roll on corners. Its renowned that a lot of rallye's and gti6's would still be on the road if they had come out the factory with it fitted.

Spoox do one spoox clicky but theres someone on the forum selling them cheaper than that.

Sorry I meant that I'd do both springs and shocks at the same time to save the effort of taking it all apart again.

I'll check that ARB out then, I've read somewhere about the Xsara VTS and the 306 estate arbs being thicker aswell.

I think you mean the torsion bars are thicker on a xsara/estate

I just fitted a hybrid ARB from Ash on here, and lowered 25mm at the same time.

The whole back end feels so much tighter.

I did think about solid mounts too but decided to replace all 4 mounts for standard Lemforder instead.

I still use the car on the road and i think these wuld just be too extreme for me.

Na they are superb, i drove hovis16's car with them and they make the back end stick to the road like shit to a blanket. Didnt really notice any extra road noise or anything plus you never have to worry about replacing them as obviously they dont wear out.

yeah plus the saxos, 205's and 106's have a similar beam and they're solid although mounted on bushes

They don't stop the suspension from moving up and down, the standard mounts allow virtually zero linear movement only lateral. I would say that until you enter a corner most drivers would be hard pressed to notice any change in the feedback from the rear of the car between standard and SRBMs. Certainly no change in harshness from the back on mine.
