Which one would you guys go for?

Both have amazing sound, golf winning it for me, the focus is easy to tune with around 300bhp easily achievable for around £1000.

Thoughts??

the r32 is nice, my mate bought an 04 3dr one brand new in black. sound awesome and have aceKonig seats. the focus st doesn't do it for me in any way

i do know you can buy much quicker though for the r32 money. infact you can pick up the next shape r32's for about a grand more!

i've been looking for a little weekend car, something under 10k and the mk4 r32 came into it [aswell as audi s4's] but think i'll leave it and get a 335i or e46 m3 [again] for a bit more. loved my e46 m3, regret getting rid big time

i personally think 10k for a mk4 golf is big money and i'm not a fan of the looks of the focus.

I'm with Rikky - M3 all the way!

Can you not get the Focus RS without the cost for mapping? My friend has the latest one, what a machine!

Have also seen that storm do a supercharger kit for the r32, diy £5200 for 370bhp 400ft/lbs, using rotrex supercharger, same one as high boost boys use i think.

Cry
sorry, back on topic:

the r32 mk4 is lovely and sound ace, i would still get one. they are going quite cheap, i think i saw a few creeping into the 5k mark a few months ago, not sure what they're like now. blue one with the wheels in black Love

edit> think a 5k r32 is a gamble, budget a bit more LOL

Neither! The R32 is slow in standard form & hard to get any real gains unless you bolt on a supercharger or throw a big wad of cash at it.

And I wouldn't touch a ford with a barge pole pieces of toot! But each to there own...

Take a look at the E46 M3 as said above or better still an E36 M3 Evo whilst having plenty of change & a straight 6 cylinder roar Thumbs up

I don't know why but I've always liked the r32 engine in the mk1 Audi tt, I know it's a gay car and all but I just like it with the Dsg gearbox, and the sound Smile

Focus st! My mate has an R32 and it hasnt seemed to wear well, plus it demands a high premium! A focus st can be picked up around £6-7k now that's had some work done to it! I love my ST and it has a full turbo back exhaust and sounds immense! His will pull away faster but on the move, with identical torque, he can't get away!

However with heavy tuning, the liners are prone to cracking on some cars, and a RS clutch is needed as the ST clutch is a bit weak!

In that case your missing out Wink

5 years with a 147 GTA and loved it; most reliable car I have owned to date and really didn’t cost that much to maintain if you reasonable with a set of spanners.

Put it up for sale and it sold I 2 days so I picked up a focus ST-500 (ST-3 with a couple of extras); the focus lasted 3 1/2 months. I think that says it all really.

After getting the focus I really regretted selling my GTA so I had to console myself with the S6 LOL

If it was my cash I wouldn't buy either as IMO you can get a lot more for your money.

I've driven an ST-3 and whilst it went well and sounded great you could tell you were driving a Ford and i think they are ugly too, however with a grand or so spent you could get one a lot quicker than an R32.

I'd go for the R32 out of the two though as it just a bit more special.

Nothing wrong with an Alfa, I too had one and it was far more reliable than any German car I've had. All makes of car have their horror stories so don't be put off.

I love the R32 but their expensive and the focus is a car I could never get excited about.

yes but a competent DIYer can do them. takes a lifetime because everything needs to come off. the E46's were the worst i think, don't think i saw it on an E36. i had an e36 m3 evo and an e46 m3 and both were fine. pot luck but worth checking for it being done on buying one or inspecting it properly. if you rbelieve everything you read about cars and problems on the internet, novbody would buy anything

the subframe thing scared me a bit on the e46 but it was all put together so it all comes apart doesn't it Wink given all the transmission and everything has to come off so yeah a bit daunting but do-able

all i heard in my 5-6 years of m3 ownership was about vanos issues from people who had read about it on the internet (internet enhanced vanos hysteria). i had no issues other than general wear and tear and everything was fine

out of the 2 cars mentioned in this thread, i would buy the golf Yes

Don't get me wrong these were the first 2 cars that popped into my head lol, like the e36 m3, a lot of car for very little money really, apparently a little bit more hardcore than the e46, so i have been told.
