Last night, driving home from work, what looks like a shallow puddle actually hit a deep ravine!

Fast forward to today, just taken the spark plugs out, and they are wet, bugger. Tried to turn the engine, got a bit of water spurting out but there was water in every cylinder. The engine seems to be locked when in gear.

I am thinking bent valves or bent rod.

Either way I think a new engine would be the easiest option Sad

Was planning on buying a new laptop too Sad

does the engine turn over by hand, ie socket on the crank pulley?

if so, get an oil sucker or similar to suck the water out the pistons, then try a compression test across all 4 pistons, should be within 10% of each other.

if there not or it doesnt turn by hand, most likely a bent rod my freind.

i rebuild my gti6 because of flood damage, 4 bent rods and a ovalled crank!! covered nearly 20k since then and she's a beauty Smile

whip all the plugs out and turn it by hand, if it does turn ok then dump some wd40 down the bores and spin it over on the starter with plugs out.

if it doesnt, rebuild time.

We bent 2 rods in the xsara vts at much lower speed Dan.
When I'd decided it was goosed. Not even trying to tow it with another car in gear would move the engine.
The 2 rods were so bent it hardly moved on the crank either way.

Hi all. I'm new to the 306, only had it a couple of weeks. I hit a puddle a couple of days ago. The car has an open K&N and after hitting the puddle the car was popping and farting for a good few miles. Is this a characteristic of sucking up a bit of water. Seems to be running fine again now though.

If its running fine with no tapping or loss in performance then you should be fine.

Well it seems to perform the same, might have the compression checked. Haven't driven it enthusiastically since. Did you have an open air filter fitted? Mine started chugging about then became stable below 2000 revs, but when 2k was reached it would bog down then try to cut out. Rectified itself after a short while. Tempted to get hold of a standard air box and chuck a perfomance filter in it.

This is something i'm freaking scared about. Really sorry to hear this danposs. My K&N 57i kit is lovely but as ialso don't have an undertray i have had some brown trouser moments the last couple of weeks.

Sorry to hear this! One time in my P2 i hit a puddle and like Dean_Gti6 mine coughed and spluttered for a few hundred metres and the lights went dim......then it sorted itself out. Avoided puddles like the plague in the Blue P1 though

Haha, erm yeah don't do that.........really, don't....i was going to buy a standard airbox for it just in case we flooded like the other year......remember that year we literally had half a metre of water?

I remember taking 4 hours to get back home, asked one guy if it was ok to go that way he'd just came, he said "yeah sure it only came just below my bumper" , i thought "nah not a chance because my black one had a pipercross one on too and it'd ave sucked it up in seconds!! Just drive it gently when it's really lobbing it down until you've sorted the air intake out, i dealt with it by just slowing down when it was really wet and avoiding every puddle i could!

I slow down and let off the throttle so the throttle body is closed until well past any standing water. Do you reckon any spray from travelling behind cars on the motorway etc could get in? I was always worried travelling on a wet motorway in it... might search for a standard box just to be safe tbh! It sounds awesome, but not worth bent rods/valves!

a k&n is what you want, the std airbox rams water into the induction system where an induction kit wont, the water will hit the induction kit filter but it wont be forced through it like the std airbox will do. We found this on impreza and 206 rally cars, a foam filter with no box is the way to go in terms of saving engine in water

Or one of those little oil-breathers tee-d in higher up the system. Reduces the suction on the water through the main filter.

Phil made a much easier point, get yourself one of those alu pipes with the little dump valve take offs and put a little ICV style KandN filter and it will relieve the vacuum. Like above but cheaper!
