Hello, I bought some second hand r888's with about 3mm tread left. I done 1 track day 1 hour 45mins driving on track and they now look like this...

Surely this cant be right? Must be something to do with the car setup can it?

Depends, if its evenly worn then probably is normal.

Pressures have a huge effect on wear if it is uneven. We usually run them at between 22-24psi.

Also the n/s/f will always take a hammering if most corners are right handers!

Are they softs or mediums?

I bought some new but second hand R888's a couple of years ago, so far i've done around 10 laps of the nordschleife, two trackdays at oulton park, one trackday at cadwell park, one 15 min session round rockingham and a few road miles on them and theres still evidence of tread on them. AFAIK they only come with 5mm tread from new so your wear looks excessive but i guess its down to how hard you are on them.

Mine are GG compound and i tend to run them around 25psi cold then check the pressure after 15 mins on track. Smile

Yea I ran them on 25psi cold. Its only the fronts that have worn really bad. They are SG Compound, super soft. I dont think having stiff rear shocks and standard front suspension helped much either (Dont ask, lol). £200 tyres for 1 track day is heart breaking! :'(

Was this on a proper circuit or an airfield trackday?

Jesus, no that is not normal for two hours driving. I'd say one of following thing is wrong:

a) Your driving

Whistle

What car are they on?

Im not sure if i once read that the SG compound may be too soft for a 306 and overheat, which i guess would kill the tyre quicker than desired.

True, but even with a soft tyre in the middle of the summer you'd have to be scrubbing the tyres all over the place to do damage like that.

Its a proper race circuit, probably not the best condition circuit around. My road dunlops I used last time were fine. I was giving it hell for leather (but aren't you supposed to?) I think you could be right with them being too soft. They were very hot after each run!

Shall I try some mediums or just use the half decent set of road'ies? Cheers

Edit: Most of you lot do track days, do you mind telling me what tyres you use, how long they last and how good they are? Thanks

Im using 195/50/15 R888's GG on some Team Dynamics Pro Race 1.2 rims (15" 7J).
Like i said above, something like 10 fast-ish laps of the 'ring, two days at Oulton park, one day at Cadwell park, i think two 15 minute sessions round rockingham and a few light road miles.
Theres still a trackday or two left in them if its dry, the wear isnt perfectly even on mine so for next year i'm wanting a bit of negative camber.

Once these tyres are dead i think im going for another set of R888's, same spec as these, although a set of slicks is tempting once i get a cage fitted.

Using decent road tyres (Michelin PE2s or similar, £60 a corner or so) I can do maybe five trackdays on a set, and that's airfields and tracks. I've not used 888s on the car yet (although I have a set ready to go on next Spring) but there's no way they should go that quickly.

In all honesty that amount of damage is down to driving style. I've toned back my speed in corners a lot lately, you save your tyres and actually get round an awful lot quicker as what sounds like some incredible drift is actually you just doing that to your tyres as you understeer towards a wall Yes

I think I'll put it down to having super softs rather than mediums. I think next time I'll buy some decent road tyres until the summer and try the mediums. I wasn't understeering around corners really.. When I felt the front sliding I would let off the throttle. I was driving fast but I was driving sensible.

I dont think the fact I had stiff rears and standard front suspension helped either...

My front suspension is very soft compared to the rear and even I don't munch tyres like that! LOL

Tend to fook the rear shoulders over instead.

Have a look at my vid.. I think my driving was more tyre friendly? I wasn't understeering and wasn't spinning the wheels at all. I will try one more time on Medium compound and if it still does it there must be something seriously wrong with my driving or the track lol.

I was well excited about using my 888's but after a couple of goes seeing the tyres warn that bad just made my heart sink! £200 for one track day on tyres is not affordable for me!

No, doesn't seem too bad, perhaps just overheated them then, what were the hot pressures?

Unfortunately I didnt check the warm tyre pressures as I forgot my pressure guage so had to borrow one when they were cold and didnt want to bother the person I borrowed the guage from again. But I cant imagine them being far off 30psi hot would they?

I managed to wear a set of brand new GG compound R888s down to the wear indicators in less than three hours, it was a really hot day on a fairly aggressive airfielt circuit though. Grip was astonishing and understeer was non-existan, however huge grip takes a toll on the rubber. I was running 36psi hot as I found that gave me even wear accross the surface and minimal shoulder wear. I did'nt have negative camber or coilovers at the time though so who knows what it would be like but I reckon you could come down on the pressures a lot with the right amount of camber etc.
