I’ve just had the head dipped in a cleaning tank, however there seems to have been a problem and the cleaner has been more ‘aggressive’ than wanted (Doh!!)

In the photos below you can see that the casting where the camshaft sit now have a slightly rough surface.
I have also measured the gap between the cam journal and casting with Plastigauge and the gap varies between 0.050mm – 0.063mm

Question; have I #@*’ed my head? Or can it be used?

hmmm, the only solution I can think of would involve facing the head to cam ladder surfaces and line boring where the camshaft sits to restore the machined finish.

whether that's viable versus the cost of another head is debatable, given you can pick up a decent gti6 head for about £100 or so.

time to see the advice of an engine builder or remanufacturer I reckon Sad

only few I know of around here is South Wales pistons in cardiff, or JSE engineering in Pengam, just up the road from Ystrad Mynach.

dont know any over cwmbran way.

I would get on to the guy who dipped it in the caustic soda tank and tell him he owes you for a repalacement head. Every machined surface is destroyed, even the threads are damaged. The head is scrap now, it's not possible to save it at all.

Thats what caustic soda is Roll eyes it cleans up cast iron beautifully, but if you put anything ally in there it has to be monitored regularly to make sure its not removing material. Once clean it then needs to be neutralised in water or an alkali solution.

Thanks guys Sad

It was dipped in "Masco 245-dm Alkaline cleaner at 7% concentration and added 503-spray 1:20 ratio"
To be fair the person who dipped it is a friend who was doing me a favour where he works. with it being an alkaline cleaner they thought it would have been ok. I have had other steel (steel being the key word I think) parts dipped before and it does not even take off the paint, it just removes the grim. No idea what has happened this time.

al least it will look nice as a table stand - lol

Glad I have that spare engine now - phew!

Aluminium is more reactive than steel so caustic soda (alkaline solutions) p*ss through it.

Quick question that I hope one of you might know the answer to... Is a M16 head the same as the Gti-6 head?
