Ok, I've spoken to Bilstein UK, specialist pug and TVR garages (for a 3rd opinion), and as has already been suggested the verdict is they are only fit for the bin.
Bilstein said the cost of replacing the casing would be £170, not taking into account if the insert was also bent. So basically a repair would cost more than a new damper.
I've requested a refund, will see what happens... Unsure

These were sold to Ash in good faith (for £250) after being removed from my Rallye (which has been well documented I had a smack in last December resulting in it being scrapped). There was no visual sign of damage on either strut from memory, if there had been I'm pretty sure that Ash wouldn't have bought them from me in the first place. I didn't know they had been sold on until I got a PM about this today and it appears that he also sold them on in good faith, based on the advert I've seen.

I don't remember seeing any obvious damage to them when I transported them. I know Ash didn't fit them to his car so he wouldn't have known either.

Bum!

Do you have any photos of them from when you sold them to Roland Rat to verify the situation?

No I don't have any photos of them and I don't see why I should be trying to prove anything. Ash removed the suspension from my car himself and assessed he would buy them there and then, therefore to my best knowledge I hadn't sold something which was damaged, and as others have mentioned there was no apparent visual damage.

I have been liasing with Ash since I only found out about this at lunchtime and I'm also liaising with Mike who has now PM'd me.

I would suggest that those people who aren't directly involved keep their comments to themselves until such time as the matter is resolved, as you have absolutely no idea what's being discussed off the forum with regards finding a solution to this.

Regardless of what is being discussed via PM the only fair resolution is that Ash refunds Mike and you refund Ash.

The damage was clearly caused whist on your Rallye so anything but a full refund is unfair to Mike, and how you and Ash want to settle up between yourselves is up to you.

As above those who arent involved should stay out of the matter.

Im looking into the matter and trying to get a resolution that suits all parties.

I could quite say no refund as it clearly states in my ad they were off a damaged car and to the best of mne and several other members knowledge they were fine, plus its taken a few weeks for this to come to light. If they had been bought off ebay in the same manner then Mike would have no leg to stand on.

BUT

As Jon has pointed out well get something sorted between the 3 of us im sure.

Well, this certainly won't be needed. I have agreed to a fair settlement proposed by Jon and Ash. Hopefully we can all move on and forget about this unfortunate incident with reputations untarnished.

Bump!!!

Just searched and found this...

The other morning on route to work I enthusiastically hit a rather harsh humpback bridge and became air bourne.

Now I appear to have major tyre feathering issues and what appears to be a lot of toe - in. The heat generated in the tyre after a relatively short journey (20miles) is quite surprising and as I'm running Toyo T1 Rs there wearing pretty quickly Sad

I haven't had a chance to put the car in the air yet and investigate but do you think I could have the same issue here?

I'm running bilstein b4's with ebach springs.

It would have to be a heck of a bang to bend strut casings. How long were you airborne for?? Tracking does need doing every few months, and "enthusiastic" driving does mean getting it done more often. On the basis of an internet diagnosis I'd say get it tracked and see what the "before" measurements were.

Its suprisingly easy to bend a strut, I've managed to do a strut and the cast iron hub assembly hitting a kerb after sliding on some snow a few winters back, they are only about 3mm thick and not designed to cope with the kind of lateral loads inflicted by hard landings or sudden side impacts.

Would a pothole that damaged a heel badly have damaged a strut and or hub

Is this because the car is French and made from recycled foil paper from Gauloise cigarette packets?

No, it's because if something didn't bend, then something vital would break instead.

However, having stripped down the bent set of B8's (I've got them here), so long as the seals were okay in service they would probably have been fine*, there's no cracks in the casings, the bearings are okay, there's a little debris in the oil but that may be standard wear and tear anyway. New seals, oil and casings should see them right.

*Not that I'm condoning doing it with any other bent struts unless you can strip and inspect them first mind!

I parted with £30 and got a kwik fit fitter to check the wheel alignment this afternoon.

I would have done it myself but it was easier and quicker to get them to sort it.

The chap said it was 30 out. I'm guessing 30 degrees?! He was a bit of a Peugeot nut as well which went down well. He checked underneath and apart from a leaking N/S driveshaft seal. Seems ok.

Bit of a thread revive but was worried the other day. Never had a car go airborne like that before. Was a heavy landing! Cheers for your input guys. The 6 feels and handles good again.
