im struggling with drivers side
didnt attempt long at it as i ended up at pub
but when i try and take track rod off, it feels like the whole ram is twisting.... dont want to damage it

should i be holding the ram while its extended and try and remove the knuckle of the rod then?
use a pair of vice grips on the ram?

dont want to damage the ram

wish i had access to heat Sad

go to B&Q and buy a small blowtorch. I use them all the time for removing tough nuts and bolts!

Handy for setting spiders on fire in the garage too.

Damn right, think I got mine from Screwfix. It's nothing massive but really handy for jobs like this.

Or, as Jim points out, death and destruction.

not sure if they are same mate...

i used a little bit of heat for rods, now got huge bottles setup on my garage.

will be less drunken partys in the garage this summer, the beetles and spiders will be running in fear LOL

done the drivers side last week, done it with wishbone on, on full lock (cant remember which way)

that little bit of heat made it soo much easyer, just got vice grips on in no more... turn her off and she comes off without twisting steering ram/wrack too much

if you look at my pictures you can see the peugoet one

once its on its a f*cking nightmare, i used a flat screw driver to twat it off with hammer.... got at it from under chassis

putting the new one back on was also interesting, had to push it on at 3 points to get f*cker back on. Lucky mates were in for a social few and were there to help LOL

Take it that it's not just me who's had issues changing the TRE then?!

Finally managed to loosen the bolt using a blowtorch, but when trying to unscrew the TRE it just won't budge. Tried heating it without success so just left it doused in WD40 for a bit. But if anyone's got any suggestions on how to do it they'd be greatly received!

Take it to somewhere that does the tracking (it'll need doing anyway after fitting a new TRE) then ask them to fit it. Most places won't charge extra.

Unscrewing the TRE from the track rod should be fairly easy I usually crack the locknut then get a spanner on the track rod undo by hand usually undo first time. Wink

Are these simple enough to change?
I have a xsara vts or vtr (whichever it is cant remember)rack on the bench in the garage, its only done about 35k miles but while its off the car I may aswell freshen it up with some new genuine arms.
I take it I just undo the gaitor/rubber boots fold them back then untwist the arms uzing mole grips and stilsons, is there a special tool I can get to help and if there is would it be usable on other cars eg fords?
Thanks fellow liveforthreeosixies

I'm slightly confused, But are they all actually talking about track rod ENDS in this (old) thread because some of the descriptions sound like one and some the other....

If thats the case i might leave fitting the ends until I get it tracked and get them to do it at the same time.
Seeing as i'll need to drive straight there anyway.

did my 205 one the other week, just put the whole rack into a vice and a spanner on the locknut to undo it. didn't wind the whole tie rods out or anything. just the TRE

lol, I crashed the work car today twiceLOL
First time just understeered, pressed the brakes withe the s**ttest padsin ever with s**t discs and tyres made from recycled plastic and it locked up immediatly, on a 100 degree bend, a curb then straight the other side of the curb a huge stonewall from a house/ converted farm barn, ended up hitting the curb with front wheel and luckily i had it sideways by then instead of straight on understeer so the rear wheel hit the curb just after the front bouncing us off away from the solid wall, got away with bending the f**k out of the front wheel and just scraping the muck of the rear bumoer and tyre, the spare was flat and this was at 4 am, so we carried on anddrove 160 mile before finding a garage willing to put the undamaged tyre on out spare rim.
I managed another 30 mile before pulling into services near chester and come off the roundabout then left round the bend, straight on again into and nearly up them huge curbs designed to deflect hgvs away back into the road, managed to drive back home with the steering wheel 100 degree out and slightly dodgy handling, took the car home removed wheel to find the track rod arm bent round LOL, and a tiny scrape on the front bumper which is not niticable anyway seen as its a total shed anyway.
Its been quite a interesting day, I think the 2 in back s**t thereselve a bit LOL

So I get the impression the way you fitted the components was poor if that happened.

What components all ive done is straighten the arm out with a long bar, reset the tracking using stringline and put some grease in the inner rod end balljoint thing, I couldnt get the arm off for the life of me, no spanner cutout and no space either, its a ford focus.
I bled the brakes up a while back but it barely improved it, cheap s**t friction material and s**t tyres with 4 men and around 60-70 stone of weight plus nearly a full tank, and wet greasy roads and deisel spilt, and anything else I think of I will add lol

I'm confused, does this story not have anything to do with track rods other than bending one, amongst other damage, then?

Well I could say its related other than bending one if somebody knoes how to remove them from a focus?
Didn't damage anything else other than the wheel in the first crash, I do not know how we scraped through today by the skin of our teeth and got off so lightly

    Ah I see.

Sounds like you got off lightly with minimal damage then!
