Well, as mentioned briefly in another thread, I have been helping to sort out a Dax Rush kit car.

It's owned by my housemate, who has taken it on after his father died 7 years ago.

It was built by the family in the late 90's, and I believe it was on the road by 1998. The tax disc when we started was dated to 2003, so 7 years stuck in their garage.

It's a standard Rush chassis (so quite small), with the donor car being a Ford Capri. The engine is a 2.0 litre OHC Pinto with twin 40's and Piper cams (270's).

We had fired it up over the last two summers, just to see if she still worked, both times having fuel leaks that needed sorting.

So come this summer, with the money to back it's comeback, we started.

Surprise surprise, another hose had perished. Once that was sorted, and some juice in the battery, she fired up once again Smile.

At this point, other then the obvious tax/insurance/MOT, we were not expecting huge things to be required to get get road worthy. This however, was not the case.

Items replaced included:

Cam pulley

for a Kent vernier pulley

Waterpump

Alternator

Thermostat housing

for a chromed version

Oil cap

Chromed version

Rad cap was swapped as it was letting by at low pressure

Fuel pump was replaced

As was the dizzy cap

Rad. top hose (swapped for a kevlar reinforced item)

New HT leads, with some lead management! As well as manifold heat-wrap

The tyres were Avon's that were original to the cars construction, so these were ditched after an "interesting" test run for new Toyo R888's.

To allow fitment of the new oil cap, we cut through the bonnet, and also added the vents with mesh and rubber edging for the OE look (if there is one!)

With oil cap...

Interior was treated to some new bits.

Gearknob was pitted, but luckily MOMO still sell the same one, so that was replaced.

Old one in the new one's box

New one on the car with ignition switch

In the mean time, the timing was sorted, and the carbs set up properly.

Result, 121BHP at the flywheel (up from 100BHP before sorting and god knows what before the distributer was setup properly).

With a "wet" weight of around 600kg's, that gives a power to weight ratio of around 200 BHP per tonne.

Final job before taking her out properly, swap the rubbish temporary oil we put in to clean the crap out with Millers.

And here she is cleaned and ready to go!

Exhaust

Out in the real world...

Just need to sort some insurance in the new year so I can drive it myself!

Some fun shots with my daughter...

Cheers for looking!

Mark.

Yeah get some pics up.

After new brakes, V8 is what's destined for this.

Cheers everyone.

Yeah she had some Meguires action. Nothing too major; paintwork isn't fantastic, although for a kit car, I believe it isn't too bad.

Been out a few times now, and other than endless niggles appearing, it's good fun. People generally think she's a lot faster than she is... must be something to do with the huge flames that pour out of the exhaust!

Well, an update to the thread.

The car has been used a fair bit since it's "completion". I will get some pics up soon of some evenings out and what not.

Unfortunately, yesterday afternoon, whilst following the Dax in my Jetta, I watched as my friend lost control on a roundabout. Oversteer on the right hand bend to snap oversteer in the other direction, spun out, hit a curb, smashed into the air and then straight into a lamppost whilst still in the air.

He was inches away from being killed, as luckily the rear wheel took the impact. He was winded, might have a broken hand, and has plenty of abrasions from the impact.

Car is going to be a write off, although amazingly it drove home at 2MPH with the wheel just holding on (we were very close to home). Not sure what the future holds for it.

Will upload various pictures soon (possibly tonight).

All I can say is, it's not nice believing you are watching your best mate die in front of you! Luckily it wasn't that bad.

Mark!
