in theory yes, though you can never tell, some you can't detect the play and they're still beyond.

Doh.

So if you've got play, what's that the sign of?

Knackered needle bearings, knackered trailing arm shaft, or both - caused by the knackered bearings?

yup, they're the same for any 205 309 306 ZX and Xsara beam, that's Neat Autos in West Drayton, decent price that is, they'll be Peugeot boxed as far as I know too.

Right. Couple of more questions before I splash out..

You said (welshpug):

'Fingers crossed the shaft hasn't worn through the bearing case.'

What if it has??

Cheers.

If that's the case then the tube/crossmember is scrap as the bearings are pressed into the trube, if the shaft wears through them it damages the seat for the bearing's case.

Nobody has as yet worked out how, or or rather bothered to repair the crossmembers so its a case of finding a donor that hasnt worn too badly and transferring all the good bits to that.

If you can afford to have the car on axle stands for a day or two I'd strip the one on the car apart and see what you need, but if not I'd get a donor unit, fit the new bearings and shafts if required, then use your torsion bars if they are bigger.

Well hopefully my Xantia will be MOT'd tomorrow or friday, whether it passes or not is a different thing. Either way I will be able to take the 306 off the road for a bit once it has.

Nothing sounds squeakey at the back of my car, never has done. My mate's got a d turbo which makes an awful squeaking sound when people get out and the rear suspension extends slightly, that sounds like it could be doing damage to the tube. I'll have a look at mine one day, if the Xantia passes it's MOT the 306 only needs to do one more trip to uni, then it can have a rest Razz

Not looking forward to this to be honest! Fancy rebuilding my beam welshpug? Wink

It's possible, it just doesn't make sense money-wise, you can regrind the shafts to reclaim them too but even that's more money than you can get them from neat for, so...

So basically if there outer edge of the beam tube is worn, it's for the bin? And if the trailing arm shafts are worn they're also for the bin?

If they're ok however just new needle bearings are required?

Cheers.

And does anyone have a spare GTi6 rear beam that requires refurbishment going cheaply - that isn't too knackered! Seems a shame to blow 120 quid on parts for a drum beam.

DRUMS FTW! I'd rather drums tbh, most later 306's have the big drums too which work very well.

Looking at the parts needed for my rear beam rebuild, was looking on service box and I know I need 5132-62 which is all the bearings/seals, but theres 5154-10 (number 12 on the picture) which is listed as a "crossmember seal ext" is this required aswell, or is it just the bearing kit and the seals for the ARB that I will need?

That is the metal ring that the outer seal sits in, depends on the condition of your original one, but worth changing anyway, some kits come with these but not the Peugeot one (though I have had a peugeot boxed kit with it in, it didn't have any part numbers on the box)

I'm going to rebuild my rear beam in the near future and have most of the parts required, i think.

Here's what i have:

Can somebody please confirm that the bearings are the correct ones, i had a look on servicebox but didnt see them part numbers, so ideally i'd like confirmation before i rip the beam apart to find i've made a school boy error. LOL

I'm going to buy some febi bilstein trailing arm shafts to fit at the same time, mainly so i can do it all in a weekend without finding out the old shafts are fubar'd then having to wait for new shafts before i can continue, and also because i'll be sticking a 30mm arb in and i'm lead to believe they have a 30.9mm bore.

Also, since i'm being a tart and want to fit mostly new parts, am i correct in thinking i will also need these parts (two of each):
5174 03 - Crossmember seal
5179 10 - Crossmember seal
5153 10 - Suspension bar stud
5154 05 - Suspension bar plug
6963 10 - Flexible washer
6933 19 - Hex nut

Is there anything that i've missed?

5154.05 is not needed, and you could of saved a bit of money by buying the 306 bearing kits, instead of individual items

i only buy individual bearings/seals when building 205/309 axles

I bought all of the above a few years ago as a kit from someone on here, for a reasonable price. Smile

I was just checking what else would be needed as i don't want to get it all apart then realise ive got to stop whilst i order more parts. I don't really have the space on the driveway to leave the car on axle stands for more than a weekend.

Thanks for the info. Thumbs up

How are you planning on fitting the bearings? Press or tapping them into the cross member?

Most likely be tapping them in, i've measured o/d of the bearings and made some bearing drifts at work to make sure i don't damage them.

If i can help it i'm going to try and avoid removing the beam crossmember from the car, the only thing that's playing on my mind is how to get the old bearings out cleanly without damaging the bore.

I wouldn't worry about B.

D is the seal.
