I've finally found the time and funds to make a start on my 205 project.

The plan originally was to keep the car stock and stick gti6 brakes and engine into it.

Things have changed a little now and I've aquired an OMP 10 point cage and a 206 gti180 engine and box.
The car is still giong to look standard inside and out, with the exception of the cage (going to paint it steel grey to match the body colour of the car - dont want it to really stand out) and all of the seats etc will be kept, even if the rears will be un-usable (may be able to get the baby seat in!.

Externally, I've already fitted the 309 rear axle and wishbones, as well as the slightly thicker 309 ARB to take the extra engine weight. Gti6 calipers are also fitted.

I'd already aquired a couple of 6 engines, but last week was offered a 206 gti180 for a stupidly low price. I know this conversion has already been done, but its not as common as the 6 swap and the VVT and noise of this engine, along with 180+ bhp standard, makes it a no brainer - plus ive managed to cover the purchase cost of the donor car without selling anything engine wise (so kinda got a free engine Happy )

Donor car:

The engines only covered 44k and is still very clean. I'll add more pics when I get chance.

If anyone has already done this conversion, or knows someone that has, Please let me know as I'm gonna really struggle with the wiring Crazy

Cheers guys, More to follow.

you WILL need aftermarket management, Dutchman Hilgie (205 V6 builder) has documented a lot of the details of an EW-205 conversion.

Cant you just stick the 206 180 stuff in there like with a gti6 conversion? It works in a 206?

its a Multiplexed car, so if you did want to use the original ecu, you'd need to wire up the while car, instrument cluster, lights doors etc etc...

not impossible, but far more difficult than just fitting say a DTA or emerald ecu.

You also would need to cut the cradle for the top engine mount and re-weld it slightly further forward. Brake master cylinder might be an issue as well.

Just found this thread on 205drivers: link

Cheers for the link. I can find a ton of stuff on the 138 engine, but cant find much relating to the 180 setup in the 205. I'm a fab welder so the fabrication is not an issue. The wiring will be! Think Carl will be up to the challenge???

Sounds like its going to be a nightmare to convert, and the more I read, the more the 6 engine route appeals, but its a healthy, low mile engine with 180 brake out the box - maybe more without the CAT and airbox setup...

Was planning on moving the MC to the passenger side anyway. Mondeo's have the linkage and the 206 has something similar I may be able to modify.

Always wondered what preplexed and multiplexed meant...Care to expand a little, cos I dont get it.

What sort of money is the after market management? This is the bit that scares me, fabs, not a problem but the wiring Cry

Multiplex cars are a pain, they need to talk to each ECU and with all the ABS, Traction Control rubbish won;t work unless you have a degree in Electronic's to figure it all out
Aftermarket ECU is a doddle to fit, Just need mapping and then done

Its begun...

The engines out...

And the bays had the initial clean...

Next I'm gonna clean all the pipework and wiring out and pull the 180 engine out of the 206.

Interesting thread is this. Can i ask what made you decide to go down this route rather than sticking a 6' engine in?

Seemed a good idea at the time Crazy Got the 206 on Saturday and I couldn't resist at 1200 quid! I took it for a blast and I was convinced!

To be honest I wanted something a little different, and the fact the engine only has 44k sold the idea.

Didnt think the wiring would be such an issue. Have read about people putting these engines in earlier 206's with the preplexed loom so that may be one option to look at...

Nice going with the 205 GTi180 project. I've got a 205 GTi6 myself and its a fun car.

Are you gonna put the 205's 1.9 engine into the 206 afterwards? LOL

Started to take the engine out today:

Hydraulic clutch and a load more wiring than a 6 engine. Can anyone reccomend a company in the mids that can sort the management?

i'm going to try and keep the header tank and the Rad looks small enough to fit the 205 Happy

Cheers for the tips. Thats the main reason I'm doing it, the fact that its a rare conversion, all be it a difficult one!

I'm useless with the electrical side so gonna need all the help/advice I can get on that side of the conversion Unsure

Did you see the Topgear where they raced a GTI180 against a 1.9 8v 205, 206 kicked its arse.

Image that in the 205! Big grin

Make sure you keep updated with pictures... Thats an order! Razz
