Thanks for the comments guys Thumbs up
There wasn't any discount on the front seats - this is what he quoted for replacing all the alcantara, sorting out the foam bits and the leather where it was slightly worn.

Little update - between showers I've managed to get a few more parts installed into the engine bay. Took me a few attempts after forgetting to install the long brake lines that go to the rear of the car:

Got my aux. pulleys and brackets back from my mate. Since Rich's puleys are meant for the GTI6 I managed to press out the old spindles from the mounting plates and designed my own so I could take advantage of these using 2 of the smaller variety.

Managed to get the back end of the car painted too and re-installed the fuel tank. Since the cradle was a mess I got the rotary sander out and gave it all a good clean, Kurust and a good dousing of hammerite:

With all the showers last week I descided to strip the engine down to see how it was fairing up - not that well unfortunately. Just caught the head gasket in time. One of the metal plates had cracked between pistons 1 and 2, pretty much all the exaust valves have been passing to some degree and the inlet valves only have about 1mm of seating surface Shock
Head off;

Block:

Muccy pistons:

Sump removed

One passing exhaust valve:

After a good cleaning and painting the block looks much better now:

Its been a while since I've posted an update and was also on a nice relaxing holiday in Cyprus Big grin

Got the pulleys mounted to see if they fit OK. Had to do a little filing on the back side to get the weld flush but they fit fine now.

Got the head back after a skim and fitted all the valves back in. Nearly forgot that the bottom spring retainer has to be installed before putting the valve stem seal on!! It tool me about 2 hours to get the valves seated
All back together:

And re-attached to the block with a pug gasket:

Got a few components added and got the engine outside ready to made up with the gearbox. Got Rich's lightened flywheel too to compliment the pulley

And also sourced a brand new exhaust manifold last year so thats gone on too:

Got a new clutch fitted (so much easire using an aligning tool) got the box on and finally got them into the engine bay where they belong

Got round to changing the heater matrix sooooo glad that there is a FAQ on how to change this otherwise I'd have broken quite a few parts.
Half way there:

Also had a go at spraying the wheels. Decided to do a black centre and leave the rim silver - should look OK on a black car and with gold calipers behind....

I used a silver caliper paint on the sump and all the other bits I used Halfords high temp silver spray. Started on the suspension this afternoon. Got some braided hoses only to find that the ends need modifying so they can attach to the solid lines Shock Angry

LOL at carl jizzing in his pants LOL

Top effort going on here. Hats off.

Oh question. How easy/hard is it to detach the rear brake lines from the rear beam/hubs? As i'm going to have to remove my beam in the very near future and the only real obstacle i can think of is these line Hmm

From memory the only brake lines I needed to undo were where the 2 long lines from the front of the car where they join the rear section. I sprayed them with release oil and left them for a few minutes and they came apart OK. The rest just need to be removed from the retaining clips.

I needed to support the beam under the disks and the central tube whilst undoing the mounting bolts. Take it nice and steady and you shouldn't damage the baffle plates at the back of the disks (as mine did when a brick moved and they hit the floor). Angry

Its been a while since I've posted about progress but here ges...

Managed to get the new heater matrix sorted and back into position. It wasn't without hick-up though - thought all was in until my mate noticed that an o-ring had come off Shock so I had to remove the heater box again to get the swine on!!

After that I concentrated on getting the rear beam sorted. Its been sat in the back yard for a few weeks so decided to tackle it. The mounts had pretty much had it after 100K miles. The rubber was cracked in numerous places so they had to be replaced with something better - Miles to the rescue Thumbs up
Knackered rear mount

General condition of the rear beam although bearings turned out to be OK with no indexing

Decided on Fiat yellow and good old Pug cherry red for the colours and got going with the rattle cans. Since its been nice I managed to get it mounted with the solid rear mounts, this is what the rear looks like now:

A view of the front mount - nice and new!!

Next was the rear brake compensator thingy. Never seen a real benefit of this since my GTI never had one. One bit nice and rusted in position:

Also the spring bit that attaches to it:

After a good seeing to with a wire brush, release oil and some spray it looks a lot healthier and also works with a red spring too:

Bit more work done on the front. I've managed to get the front suspension sorted:

And a few more bits added to the engine:
