Had a search but couldn't see an answer.

How much fluid does it take to fill the brake system on gti6 with standard calipers?

I don't want to go and buy too much as I know they "say" you shouldn't store it

Cheers guys

1 litre would be more than enough to bleed it.

Thank you very much!

Drain and replace with ap racing this week and new discs and pads.

Have you got any preference on 1155/66 or ds2500 for track?

Personally I buy a couple of big 1-litre bottles of cheap stuff for about £3 each from Unipart to do the actual bleeding through, then flush through a litre or so of good stuff.

Saves you paying a small fortune for expensive stuff just to squirt it all over your driveway Yes

Pah, no chance. Started it up the other day mind, but I'm currently in Bracknell on a VMware course, not much scope for track driving here.

Instead of buying expensive DOT 4, buy cheap DOT 5.1. They mix fine and it won't damage your pipes, plus 5.1 boils at a higher temperature, so if you're going to flush new stuff through (recommended every couple of years whatever fluid you use) then you may as well go for the higher 5.1.

DO NOT BUY DOT 5. Dot 3, 4 and 5.1 are glycol based, DOT 5 is silicone based. You can't mix these.

The DOT levels are one of the most often misunderstood ratings on fluids, they don't mean what people think. People think that 5 is better than 4, and 5.1 is the best.

As 24seven said, DOT5 is completely different and should never go anywhere near your car. The*specification* for DOT5.1 says it can go to a higher temperature, but that doesn't mean that one specific fluid can go to a higher temp than another.

I always used RBF660 fluid when I needed a high temp fluid, but that was technically a DOT4, but a very good expensive one which I never managed to boil.

I.e. don't think that just because it's DOT5.1 that means it can handle higher temperatures - read the individual manufacturer spec for the fluid, but a better DOT4 is far better than a cheap 5.1.

Analogise it to sun creams - in theory, a £1 supermarket own brand Factor 30 offers you better protection than a £15 Nivea factor 15 because it has a higher number. However in reality it'd be useless watered down crap, and the more expensive factor 15 would be better.

Castrol SRF gives a better feel to braking imo. Your foot feels like it is directly connected to the pads. Only downside is the high price compared to other fluids. It is easy to think of it as half a tank of petrol every 18 months. It has 590F dry and 518F wet boiling points. Don't just add it to existing system or it will be a complete waste. Castrol do a mid range product too which needs to be used to flush out old fluid. I can't recommend this highly enough if you appreciate good braking.

Yeah getting the right fluid is key from experience, I just wasnt sure how much, I know ap racing has a good track record, we use it in the f1 stockcars and the discs are always glowing very bright at the end of a race. That is one of the only ones we've found stands up to the task,

Shame about the car owain, hopefully I'll see you out one day!

Thanks as ever for your replys though everyone
