Have a bit of a problem...

Got a pair of alloy top mounts from compbrake to fit on the KW coilovers. Thing is.. i'm confused as to how they go on..

Compbrake said... fit washer on rod.. fit top mount on top of spring pan.. and then use sleeve nut.. No thrust bearing or additional bits..

Firstly the top of the KW rod has a spacer as standard.. so if i use the washer it reduces the amount of thread available on the top. So i took away the washer and the KW thread spacer fits snug into the spherical bearingBig grin and the sleeve nut tightens nice..

But is it meant to fit like this? as surely the spring will move around under the top mount being flush?

Spring should be fine once there's some weight on it, it's only the same as the bottom spring cup after all.

So long as they're ground straight they'll stay straight, the only problem I'm guessing that spacer doesn't account for the angle that the mounts may be running and is just a straight block?

but you dont have a shoulder on it anymore so as soon as you put some weight on the shock it will come through the top hat. And without the springs on a bearing central to the rod it will grind away like a dick when you turn. Pics of i how think it should be done coming.

Well normally there would be a top spring pan that sits on the rod and butts up against the top hat spacer, but he doesn't appear to have one?

this allows the strut to sit at an angle properly whilst retaining vertical forces on the springs. The top bearing will act as thrust bearing when weight is on it allowing twist forces in the springs to move also.

This takes some f*cking about and im not taking them apart to show you exactly how its done but you drill the top hat hole to fit the rod through perfectly with zero play. (Exactly the same diameter as the bearing) then in this spacer thing thats below the threads on the KWs grind two flats to get a spanner onto (this keeps the rod still when you tighten the nut on top) HAve the nut put on a lath to get maximum sleeve on it safely. This gives you enough bite (turns) on the threads for it to be strong and safe. Put it together with springs wound down to lowest point so you can get a spanner in between top hat and strut top to tighten it then wind the springs up and push the spring hat up to the top.

The material that the spacer is made out of is different to the material that the shaft & thread are made out of, imho if it went on it should come off. I tried takling John into having a go at taking his spacers off but he wasnt too keen.

Cool

Thing is you'll be fine and better off doing it like i have, you can have top hat with some threads through it which will eventually wear and produce a sloppy fit or drill it and have it 100 percent surface area tight in the hole which wont wear, you have an allen on the top so you dont need to grind any flats either to tighten the nut. Just get it sleeved to its max.

when you say way too small how to small??? think you will find that the 2.5s are way to big i had this very same problem none of the compbrake hats fit my springs exactly so i had to grind off the paint on the top of the springs.

They are only about a mm out.

Rally design used to do them, but these days I hit the '60MM TOP COIL MOUNT' program on the mill, put in a chunk of 7075 T6 and press 'Go'.
