evening,

I'm looking into a stud and nut conversion kit and I'm aware you need M12 x 1.25 thread 80mm length to be able to run 10mm spacers.

I basically want to be able to run cyclones with normal road tyres but I also have a set of Pro race 1.2s that ill be running R888 or something similar on.

as a side note i now have a set of Hi-spec 4 pots fitted which is why i will need to run 10mm spacers while having the Cyclones fitted.

this does mean i will have to get two sets of nuts as cyclones need flat seat nuts and the 1.2s will need tapered

so basically i just wanted to confirm that this stud kit I'm looking at is all ok and then i will need to get some flat seat nuts

what are your thoughts of these?

Thanks

Tom

That kit is amazing !!!!!!

Wil Declaudio bought a set off this guy for his 106 and runs 20mm spacers and they each have Allen/ centre if I remember to do them up First Time or remove ever ...rather than using two nuts locked together ...

The Wheel nuts are great quality also ...if I didn’t have some fitted already I’d be buying these ....PS suggest you loctite them also even though they have great shoulder stops Thumbs up

I have these and were happy with their quality.
You should use a high quality thread lock and be scrupulous over threads being clean etc etc.
Whilst I used the allen key to wind them in, I still double nutted them to tighten them up.
Being 80mm long you do feel the twist of a long stud and small allen key. I wound the double nuts much further down the stud before tightening. That said, they don't need to be crazy tight in the hub, it just seemed a more sympathetic way of doing it.

Oh really I thought you would have to do them up to the same torque setting you would for the wheels?

Anyone got any idea how tight they should be?

Thanks for the advise though I’ll still use the two nut method of installation

you could just do them by hand, that will be more than tight enough if you use stud lock, you have nowhere near the clamping area you do with a nut.

Ah ok fair enough, would you still do the nuts up to 110nm once the wheel is fitted?

Depends on the wheels actually. Usually I tighten wheel bolts on steel wheels with 120 Nm. Many alloy wheels have something like 90 Nm in their data sheet.

I was given 110 by a main dealer garage I used for MOTs as a while back before I had a torque wrench I snapped a wheel bolt and had one of those moment where I realized I was being stupid and that I should get the correct tools for the job

110 sounds like vw setting and they have 1.5 pitch threads.

I remember when we had the Grp A 205 Rally car you could get really nice black flat nuts from Peugeot Sport in Coventry those were the days, They were expensive but super good quality

you get what you pay for.

I had this set fitted to my m3 without any issues, but i only fitted them once and never had the nuts off and on after first fitting, just checked the torque every so often.

a friend also had this kit fitted to his m3, with wheels on and off pretty much every weekend, the threads started to show fatigue, and it was noticeable how they were getting damaged. the stud can be easily bent out of shape if you're not careful. the nuts are pretty flawless, hard to cock those up really.

I have bought a kit for my 205, so I'm obviously not too worried about the quality, but if your car is a track/rally car and you will be using a spacer without a spigot ring then i'd suggest buying better quality. I don't imagine the tensile strength of the kit is anywhere near a standard bolt.

I have gone one step further,I have fitted ford studs, the ones that knock in from the back
On the back Ive drilled the thread out to 13mm and I’ve knock the studs in
On the front it’s a different story, because the Rear of the hub flange runs so close to The hub you can’t put the studs in (the stud heads sit 3mm or 4mm proud)
So way round is I got a machine shop to machine the back of the hub flange to make the wheel stud sit flush with the back of the hub flange, and yes there is enough meat on the hub flange
It must be the thickest hub flange on a road car
Then all I did was order some nuts to suit my alloy
