I checked my engine top mount last week as I had some noise (cracking when shifting down quickly) coming from the top right side of the engine. Good job I did as the bottom of the mount was in pieces and the threaded section had completely separated!

Ordered a replacement from the stealer (part number 182723), picked it up yesterday then went to fit it today. When I went to screw it in, it seemed tight to the side of the chassis before it bottomed out on the lower section. Compared it to the mount that came off and the two are different. I'm pretty confident the new part is the right one so believe the old one could be from a 205 GTi perhaps? I brought what was advertised as a Group N mount for the GTi6 years ago but now think it potentially wasn't the right part? Anyway, when I went to fit the new mount years ago I found the chassis was cracked so had it plated and now I think the hole has gone in slightly out, resulting in the clash when the proper engine mount is used!

So what options do I have now?

Try to force the new mount to seat properly (attempt to screw it down but be will be buggered if it doesn't fully seat)?
Try to create some additional space where the clash is (either from side wall or off the mount)?
Fit a genuine original 205 GTi mount (know idea of the part number or if these are even available from pug)?
Try to move the mounting hole (guess it would need to be cut out and re-welded back in a different position)?

Love it when the simipliest job becomes a nightmare!!!

Here are some pictures:

The two mounts:

The new mount clashing (I know it's upside down - just put it that way to judge how big the clash is):

I think that the original that was broken is the correct 306 part and the new part is wrong? What is the measurements of the two mounts?

Really! The parts are down in the garage at the moment but I'll measure them in the morning and let you know.

new one looks fine, also upside down so will clash!!

original looks like a 205 parr which is why it failed, much smaller cradle on a 205.

Yeah I know it is upside down (as said above), I just screwed it in that way to check how big the cash is.

So you don't think fitting a standard 205 mount is the way to go then? The one that came off was a Group N one so was a lot stiffer than standard (the car shook like a go-kart on idle!).

probably shook about because it was broken!

do you have the large washer that should be between the mount and the cradle? (1841 19 )

its likely that the thread insert and cradle are damaged as well.

oh, and they are tight to the side, that is normal, just not touching.

The washer is there.

The cradle and insert aren't damaged though. It was repaired previously so is pretty much double thickness at the lower attachement and the old mount had clearance to the side. It shook when first installed too.

if the mount has been repaired previous, Id hate to suggest that the fixing is welded in the wrong place!

I think this is exactly what has happened. Sorry, should have been clearer in the initial post.

The question is what todo about it? The dour options I could think if are also in the first post but open to all suggestions.

The worst thing is, I think the hole is only out by about 1mm!

find whoever welded it in place and beat them into submission with the broken mounting.

alternatively massage the cradle till it clears.

The person who did it is on here! But not going to name and shame, as sure it was a genuine mistake. I mean it only out by a tiny amount and I did give them the wrong mount to fit, plus it was over 4 years ago!

Massaging the cradle seems like the best way to sort it at this point!

Pop a hole saw around the nut and reinforced plate, the gap from cutting it out should be enough to move it over out of the way, weld it back in.

It's taken me hours and I'm in the dog house with the misses but I have got the mount in and everything back together. Didn't have time for a test drive yet but will take it for a spin tomorrow to check all is as it should be. What a nightmare!

Thread resurrection...

My engine mount keeps coming loose and I have just seen this thread and mine doesn't have this washer. Would this be the cause for it keeping coming loose?

Do you know if it is a dealer only part, I know it's "just a washer" but would like to get it right.
