Gents

Just had a call from my best mate who is also a mechanic and has done all the work on the 6...

First off I trust him implicitly so don't suggest foul play...

Anyway, he's been doing my cambelt in the evenings and has gone to move the car and started it...with no belt on

So anyway, he's compression tested it and it's 190-200 across all 4 Pistons so compression I believe is ok. It's got a rebuilt Richw head on it already and 16 new valves. He's said its running perfectly but there is a slight tap.

I'm going to pop over and listen tomorrow but can you give me the best and worst case scenarios please?! (I have a trackday on the 19th!!

Cheers

Chris

going to be 4 bent valves, it wont bend all 16 without the belt on as the rest will be closed

might as well get the seats recut to 3 angle whilst the new valves are going in and a fresh set of stem seals and clean up the face, o.e gasket and a set of payen bolts wont be too expensive.

If the belt was off and it was correctly timed my bet is cylinder 3..... 2 valves....

Aye, it won't be too horrendous. 2 bent valves, a set of bolts and a gasket (knocking on £50 fr a pug one now!), plus 5ish hours labour. You could do extras as WP mentions but guess you're mate is unlikely to pay, a light skim is always worthwhile though to ensure decent sealing, and a touch more compression.

the seat cutting I mention has two benefits, it'll open up the port coming into the seat and give a nicer angle.

it'll also set the valve back into the seat a little bit, which is a good thing with a refaced head as you'll pull back a bit of the lost valve-piston clearance.

Call me suspicious...... but I do all the cam belts at my garage. You need the drivers front wheel off for starters right? So I don't understand at all why he would "go to start the car" to move it with no wheel on and the vehicle raised whilst half way through a job?

Makes no sense to me at all.

Quite simply he was doing me a favour and doing it in bits in the evening, so as I understand it he had the belt off and stripped down but needed it off the ramps for the day so rolled it out, but started it again to bring it back in...

Makes more sense then. Probably just a slip of the mind in a rush it happens.

This is why once i start a belt job you don't come off it untill your at a sensible point were either it's 100% stripped and staying on the ramp can't be touched etc or you've 100% finished the belt and it can be started.

Hope he learns a valuable lesson LOL

Yeah it sucks but he's a good mate and a perfectionist so it will be fixed perfectly, that I have no doubt

I went and listened to it and whilst it was always a noisy engine it clearly has a metallic tap from the right side of the head when anything above idle rpm

So 3 bent valves, but apart from that all good - its having a full head rebuild anyway so should be fighting fit for the trackday on the 19th.

Does anyone have any recommendations for headgaskets etc? OEM?
