Well I've just bought a bianca 6 with an unidentified engine rattle. It's had new valves and lifters fitted by the dealer which didn't solve the initial tapping noise it had and has gone on to develop a loud rattle that increases with rpm before it was parked up. It hasn't snapped a belt or jumped the timing so no idea why you would change valves.
any thoughts on the likely culprit?

edit: this probably belongs in engines

I had a loose plug that sounded aweful but I fear you've bent valves if pug were looking to cure a tap I bet it's either thrown a belt in the past or the heads been off for some reason and a valve was bent upon refitting and the pug dealer didn't change all the bent valves and corresponding guides.

I did consider this but realised we don't have squirrels or woodpeckers so it's probably got a dropbear in it.

I wouldn't put anything past a dealer, but the receipt does say 16 valves, guides and lifters cam belt etc. It's obviously done a belt at some point as noone in their right mind is going to change valves for the sake of it. The noise isn't a tap anymore, it's a full blown rattle that starts the moment it's fired up and seems to come from down low

You'd hope not given the above work.

If it's an early car with the three bolt top cam pulleys my bet would be one has failed.

it's a 1999, could still have them though, we tend to get the left overs done here.

Yep, needs head removing and further work - that's a top end tapper all day long.

Can also tell by the speed of the tap which end of the engine it's coming from.

Unfortunately they're not so easy to get hold of down here.

she'll be getting a full rebuild, it could do with a clutch and bushes anyway.

Ah... I thought you were Somerset UK. Never mind. LOL

Just make sure all the valves and guides are done and they don't bend any refitting the head
