Can anyone think of a reason why these gauges would be s**t/unsuitable?

Yes, you get what you pay for etc. but do cheap gauges just barely work or is it more of a case of being less accurate ie. not temperature to 0.1deg but within +/- 2deg? I just want to monitor oil temperature if I fit additional oil cooling to ensure that the oil is reaching a suitable operating temperature. If they work and are within a few degrees that's fine.

These ones also look non-max power and functional so might be alright?

There is the option of 3 for 66 pounds, or just the one. I only really need oil temperature, oil pressure is already on the instrument cluster. I was thinking of either a single din mount for 3 gauges, or alternatively, mounting the oil temp. somewhere on it's own. I'd rather keep costs down instead of buying gauges I don't need. I'm not sure where to mount a single one though, as I'd rather not butcher anything too much nor have anything looking too bad, and keeping the stereo would be nice.

I did consider the top glovebox (ph.1) but that's a bit far from the driver's seat. I could cut out one vent I suppose.

Any thoughts/ideas? Particularly on those cheap gauges? I know the likes of VDO are okay but they're double the cost without a sender, plus there's buying an adaptor for the sump plug.

The age old question of do you want to pay twice pops in the old noggin
Cheep construction often means higher inaccuracy to start and faster deterioration
s**t guages dont last and can look crap
on the plus side you can replace it often to keep it looking shiny

best place is A-pillar I think, sump plug is not an ideal location, there's a temp sender in the front of the sump already.

I've got an immobiliser keypad there unfortunately.

Okay, but how inaccurate is "inaccurate"? Is it 3deg out? Fine, I want to know whether my oil is either 60deg (bad) or 140 (bad). Whether it is 87 or 90.5 doesn't matter so much.

Why does a good one need to be expensive? What about them is complicated and expensive to manufacture? I don't want something s**tty that doesn't work of course, I'm asking if there are decent ones to be had that aren't one of the big few names that want huge amounts of cash for what is essentially a little dial that takes a signal and displays it.

Is that present on a ph.1 engine or would they have more likely fitted a bung given that the instrument cluster doesn't have a temperature gauge?

If it is there then just using that would be good.

Been a long time since I've been in the bay of a phase1, wouldn't be surprised if its there and a wire for it, if not there will be a bung.

only problem with the o.e sender is that they're rarely matching the resistance range required for the aftermarket gauges.

aftermarket senders tend to be 1/8 NPT threads so you'll need an m16x1.5 or m14x1.25 to 1/8"th NPT adapter.

For fittings just go to your local mend a hose, or hydraulics supplier. They'll have everything on the shelf that you need! Thumbs up

Yeah got that covered there's a hydraulic fittings supplier we use at work. Smile

Next time I'm under the car I'll have a look for the sender. If it's difficult to get it to work with most gauges that'll be a problem. Perhaps I'll just use the hole for that with an aftermarket one.

Basically, are there any aftermarket gauges that function properly, and that aren't 50-100 pounds?

I'm doing exactly the same thing on my phase 1 at the moment. I've bought the sump plug (m14x1.25) and have spent many hours looking at gauges ect. It's annoying that all these gauges come in 52mm and not a smaller size as finding a place to mount them without looking crap is hard.

I have found a company that does OLED gauges that look pretty smart but a bit pricey, they are called zada-tech.com. The oil temp gauge I'm looking at is £100 (out of your price range I know) but think It would look alot better mounted in the car than one of these 52mm gauges plus you can add bits like Bluetooth ect which I won't be doing. I imagine these gauges are pretty accurate too (which I know your not bothered about) but I'm fussy like that. I was like you and wanted a decant gauge at low cost but didn't like the thought of having a big arse pod poking out somewhere looking out of placeNo so I'm going to go for one of these led gauges.

Good luck with the install chap.

Yeah midlife had one for sale earlier for not too much money. Should have bought it.

I could spend 100 quid on a gauge but that's a lot of money for what it is in my opinion!

A small OLED screen could replace the clock in the centre console, that'd be pretty good I'd have thought.

Is the oil temp on the dash not accurate enough for this kind of thing?

I've also wondered this as mine tends to run quite cool on the road now but still won't break 100 on track which I'm happy about given it was at 130+ before it was fitted...

Phase 1's don't have oil temperature in the rev counter, they have oil pressure instead.Yes

The phase 1's have a blanking plug on the front of the sump ready for an oil temp sender but you will still need a new sump plug with the 1/8" npt hole in it. A bit like this

I know what your saying about the price for what they are/do but like I say a 52mm gauge is a bit big for my liking and awkward to mount somewhere where it would look good.

I'm still not sure where I would mount the led gauge either to be honest, until I have it in my hand I don't know Dunno I might try something like putting it in the horn button on the momo steering wheel or in the flip down ashtray Crazy

Off for an m.o.t now so fingers crossed......

Any smaller than 52mm and your gunna struggle to see it. How about removing a heater vent and putting it in there....?

Im about to buy a oil temp gauge so finding this thread quite useful.

Is it an electric gauge running off a sensor that we need?

I think most gauge kits out there come with the 1/8" NPT sensor so all you have to do is screw it into the sump adaptor and then wire it up to the correct wires which should be labelled or have instructions. I'd imagine there would be a live, Earth and maybe two other wires for something but it wouldn't be like wiring a door loom or anything like that- simple stuff.

I did think of the vent option but i don't want to make it look too boy racer. With the led gauge I could run it into the sunvisor maybe......ummmm.

They're wrong then. Wink

Has nobody bought a relatively inexpensive gauge and had a good experience? I read around on oc and a couple of people had cheap ones that seemed fine.
