The new engine has an oil leak from the crank seals that has got progressively worse. It's a fresh build with new oil seals so shouldn't have any issues! Here's the chain of events:

  • First start of engine, no oil leak although the car didn't move anywhere
  • Drove car around the workshop area and parked up, noticed a single drop from the crank pulley end on the floor but couldn't find an obvious source
  • Took the car to get the exhaust fixed and noticed ~6 drops of oil on the trailer bed when I took the car off at the crank pulley end
  • Ran the car for about 10 minutes looking for an oil leak and couldn't find anything. Left it for half an hour and saw a drop on the floor and a drop hanging from the sump on the crank pulley end. No load was put on the engine though
  • Started it up again and noticed oil coming from the gearbox crank seal end now as well

  • I've got an oil pressure gauge that didn't seem unreasonable. 6 bar when cold that eventually dropped to 1.4 bar when warm at idle.

I'm not convinced the seals have failed, seems too much of a coincidence that both have gone?

We're they genuine seals? If they were freshly replaced. What can happen when fitting them is the lip can be damaged when getting it into place or if it isn't central. Happened many a time. Were they genuine?

I think I got them from GSF. I find it surprising that both have failed though? I'd get it if one was bad, maybe I fitted it wrongly but both failing is odd. I've fitted a new seal another engine and that's done over 1k race miles without any problems.

It is very strange to have both buddy, I have to say but I had that with my astra on the gearbox side seal. Brand new seal and it leaked after, the only thing is to possibly try some seal conditioner into the oil system, might be worth a try?

I've pretty much decided to pull the engine out again so will look then. Will try a different oil filter and maybe different pump as well, see if that helps

So going to replace all the crank seals again and the O ring and hope that fixes the problem.

May be worth trying genuine ones ? I think they also come with a locator ring to help installation!

I use Payen seals, no issues, much cheaper than o.e

Where do you get them from? I've been recommended Payen by a few people but not sure where to get them. Do they do the rubber O ring between the oil pump drive and crank belt sprocket?

I get them from south wales pistons, they're supplied by FPS who supply most of the motorfactors too.

peugeot do the o-ring for 50p but its only a later engine thing.

Ok, I'll call around and see who can get them in for me.

I don't remember putting an O ring on the crank and I wasn't there when it came out of the car so not certain if I need one or not. Any way to check?

keywayed oil pump drive pulley is later engine with the o-ring
older engine friction drive sprocket no key-way rely on the crank bolt tension to drive the oil pump

If you have the older type, you can buy the newer sprocket as I did, bout £17 from the stealers iirc.

There was definitely a removable key as it fell out once while I wasn't paying attention so should be ok

The older type has a key for the spacer but not the sprocket, the newer type has 2 keys iirc.... Il have a look tomorrow to see of I've still got pictures from my engine build.

If you could, that would be great. Not taking the engine out until this weekend although I'm tempted just to order a set of O rings in case I do need one.

As said, the crankshaft has two keys, one for the cam drive and one for the spacer. On the later engines the spacer and gear are one part and the same key is used.

I would never recommend using the friction drive, always the later type.

Sorted some new Payen crank seals. Will replace the hockey stick ones with genuine as well just to be sure. Any photos of the crank spacer setup?

Are these the right part numbers for the later type? This is everything I need?

    0514 92 - O ring
    0513 78 - Oil pump sprocket
