At long last I'm going to get my rear hatch sorted, which will require a new rear window as they allegedly can't be removed and replaced intact. I've looked on Servicebox and it lists a seal and rear window for my VIN. My rear hatch is a P3 type and Rallyes had either, with a fair number having P2 rear hatches. Servicebox lists a seal but I didn't think the P3 rear window had a seal, I thought they are just bonded in.

So I can check the part nos are correct, would someone be able to lend me a VIN of a P3 GTI6 to enter into Servicebox?

Many thanks.

Here's a screen grab of the details for the tailgate on my P3 - hopefully this helps (Car was built March 2000).

Ive checked this screenshot of P3 tailgate part nos against my VIN on Servicebox. It is identical, showing that my Rallye was originally fitted with a P3 tailgate.

The seal costs more than the glass!

The seal isn't actually a seal it's really just a trim piece and can be removed and refitted with the glass in place.

Ah, I thought the seal was under the glass, but now you mention it, it looks like the P2 trim piece not present on a P3 tailgate which I would not need. That might save some pennies. Therefore, is the P3 glass etc just the P2 with that piece omitted?

Mik, no.

Ph2 glass has a different part number to Ph3, suggesting they are different in some way

I think Ph3 glass is slightly larger and has more of a rounded edge so it looks better without the "seal"

Sounds logical. Even though the screen grab above is for P3 cars, I do not see where part no 11 could fit on a P3 tailgate as it seems to fit on top of the glass. It looks as though they have used the old illustration as it also shows the P1/early P2 moulding between the lights (no 3) that is not present on a P3 tailgate.

Darn it, I've waited too long. As some may recall, my rear hatch has a repaired ding on it and the stress allowed a rust bubble to form at the bottom of the glass. To refurb the tailgate the glass needs to come out and opinions seem to be that it can't be done in a way that allows the window to be reused. So I need a new rear window. I enquired today and the rear window is now NFP (shows as such on Servicebox) and my friendly parts man has established there are none at any dealer in the UK. There are some across the ditch and my contact has given me some email addresses of dealers who have them in stock.

I'll try that route, but against the possibility no-one will send me one (I've had dealers in the UK flatly refuse to mail me parts), I'd like to solicit some advice from you chaps on the forum to work out the best way forward and solve my problem. As I see it my courses of action are:

1. Get an aftermarket rear window. Does anyone know if any are equivalent quality/fit to the OE ones? Obviously I need a tinted one.

2. Attempt to remove the one I've got and re-use it. I know it is said to be impossible without damage to the heating element contacts, but is this definitively the case (as opposed to merely more difficult than desirable and a glass man would *prefer* not to take the extra time etc).

3. Get a better Cherry Red tailgate complete with window (though this will have the VIN of the donor car etched on it).

I'd be keen for any ideas or alternatives I've not considered.

Have found one of the last rear windows in captivity in Belgium but having some language difficulties. Have enlisted a multi-lingual friend to give them a call.

Am a little nervous about moving a big piece of glass long distances.

A Cherry P3 tailgate would be great (and agree it would be less hassle) but haven't managed to find one.

Any viable suggestions would be welcomed.

Dutch, and my mate speaks Dutch. He said he'd call the Belgian dealer today to sort it for me. Then I'll need to organise a courier.

Now I've actually got hold of the new glass my attention is focused on this once again. Can we confirm the 8745 48 part is not required for a P3 tailgate? From the above I am guessing it is not as there is nothing on my P3 tailgate that fits over the top of the glass when installed (and from the parts diagram above it appears this part fits on top of the glass).

I ask as my parts guy thinks it is required and has quoted me for it.

A related question: when prepping my spare tailgate (yet to be collected from pug_306) for painting, do I clean out all the sealant from the glass aperture entirely or does something need to stay in there to bond the glass onto.

Nope, Ph3 does not have that trim. From what I remember having removed that trim from a Ph2 I think the glass on a Ph3 has a more rounded edge to it because of this.

Awesome, thanks. That will save me £97.11+VAT (which is about what the glass cost including the cost of organising my own courier from Belgium).

Can anyone help with the other question - is the glass just held in there with some black stuff squirted in there directly between the metal and the glass, so can I clean out the tailgate glass aperture down to bare metal prior to getting it painted?

Take all the old sealent out n replace with new fresh sealent i would of thought and if that seal pictured above is required i would of thought the glass rests on it as the outer seal and the sealent goes inside im not positive mind but seems sensible also goo/ spare sealent could ooze out whilst fitting if its not in place

Is a guess but based on the rubber seal in my ph3 under the glass is definately rubber not goo

Also pretty sure thats a phase 1/2 phase diagram ph3 has no bottom lip (item 3 )

That's not a seal, its just a bit of trim phase 2 has, it can be removed and refitted.

Ive got a pic but it wont show up clearly on here if i resize it the ph3 seal is not on that pic
