Ooooh look, another Red Rallye thread......!!!

So, by now most of you know I own the above......seems it quite a well known car here, can trace back the ownership to when Tony bought it, approx 5 years ago I think. Got a pretty big history pile with it, and its actually in great condition for its age.

So what what do I know about it? Well, it's on its third engine from what I can gather. First one died of H/G failure, second one died after running low on oil, so a third, GTi-6 engine got stuffed in. Kerry, the guy I bought it from got busy and ripped out all the aircon stuff and put the proper rallye aux belt set up on it. She's been lowered 40mm and has a powerflow exhaust (which is too noisy for me and has to go!) but other than that is pretty clean and original. I bought it on the strength of the bodywork and whilst it's not quite perfect, it's as good and straight as any I will find. Mechanicals are easy to sort (not that it needs sorting!), bodywork is a lot harder and more expensive.....

So, my plans....ideally, I'd like to do a concourse spec refurb on it, very much like Coskev did. The underside has been done in a black stonechip type covering, which while practical and does the job, I want it red the same as the body....want to have the engine out to do the engine bay properly and generally put everything back to factory spec....

It needs a proper airbox set up to replace the open cone filter, a few bits and pieces of trim underneath, I've already got a bargain brand new front grill for the bumper, radiator clips need replacing, want a std boot lock surround etc. Plenty for me to do. It is a credit to the previous owner though who started the good work. I promised him I'd continue it, so I will...

Interior is in great nick for a rallye, no rips at all. Could do with a new steering wheel and I'd like a new gearknob and gaitor too.

So I've plenty to do. Coupled with the buggy, I'm gonna be busy i think!

Lol, don't worry Tom, there will be plenty.

It's odd really. The boot side panels look light on paint. Not sure if that's how they were (did hear the Rallyes were light on paint) but I wouldn't be happy with it as a punter....under the carpet, it's clearly been used for humping and dumping....

Bought a can of spray paint from Halfords today. Damn good match. Grinder with wire brush attachment coming out to at tomorrow

Hmm my Rallye has carpet on the rear arches. Do they not normally have that then?

Bit of an update.

Never liked how far into the arch the rear wheels Sat compared to the front. It did my head in a bit to be honest. Picked up a pair of 20mm spacers. Made all the difference. Added a bit of width to the overall track too so should perhaps be a bit more stable on the rear.

Before:

After:

Loads better. Onto bare metalling the boot floor once my night shift working neighbour is up....

I imagine it's perhaps not a good thing on a track. However, the Rallye is highly unlikely to see a track and I'm not really one for giving it massive beans on the road so doubt I'll see much difference. It's more for the aesthetics than any handling changes.

Well, once it finally stopped p**sing it down, I got out and Dr used to make a start on the boot floor.

Clearly been used for humping s**t about. Loads of bits of plaster etc and the mouldings in the metal of the floor are a bit dinged up in places. Not going to bother with stripping the h derside to try and knock them out, just not worth it....anyway, the state of the paint was doing my head in so I got my sander out, and got busy.

This one shows some of the dings I'm on about....

Managed to get a couple of coats of etch primer down...but too cold really but with the air being damp, I didn't fancy leaving it bare....

First job was remove the odd clips someone had riveted in the boot....30 seconds with a hammer sorted the rivet heads....

Next, was try to remove the arch liners, which are secured with those gay torx head screws through the side skirts.....this bolt didn't want to play and the head rounded as soon as I got near it.....Not enough room to drill it, so had to get a hacksaw blade in. What a pain in the ****....

Rear bumper off, not before one of the bolts sheared....

NSR arch didn't look too bad in there....

Attacked with the grinder with a wire cup brush....found a little rust but only surface so nothing major...

That's as far as I've so far today....This is all gonna go a bit Coskev I think.....
