Hi all,

I see a tad bit of debate about whether coilies are the way to go or some sort of alternate set up with blisteins and eibachs. What is the group opinion of the best suspension setup for a fast road / minor track usage?
Originally thinking... Hybrid arb, coilovers, upper and lower strut braces.

This ok? What are the options? Budget is say £500-800.

All depends what roads are like where ul be driving it.

I had coilies but was far far to stiff for where I live got b4's a eibachs,would like b8's really top marks for b8's!!!!

I think a 100% standard refresh is the first step, no point doing anything else if the bushes and besm are sgot

On top of a refresh i fitted a 1" arb, the spax PSX kit upper and lower strut braces with good quality tires. It handles beautifully now. I even removed the solid mounts to fit OE ones to keep the cars fun characteristics in place.

I've got really good tyres ATM so no worries there. I think I'm going b8s, eibach springs, strut braces, arb then and review all the other bits. What's brilliant about this setup is it's not mega expensive!

Another vote for getting the basics right before putting uprated shiny bits in.

I did the entire front - bushes, wishbones, struts/dampers, top mounts, and rear beam bushes (still on old beam and shocks, but not for long) and it feels incredibly precise and direct now. It may seem OK with old bushes (mine felt OK on the rusty knackered stuff and it didn't make noises etc), but replace them and it is a big difference.

When replacing those parts is it literally standard (just new) parts to go in or are there updated equivalents to go in instead?

Standard is more than up to the job, many seem to forget how good a box fresh 306 on decent standard size tyres work, I guess due to them being 15 years old at the least, 20 years for an S16!

Hi, I recently did this.

Wishbones with bushes and ball joints £36 a side
Wheel bearings £30 a side plus fitting (cost me £130 to fit, 3 hours labour as they where a mare to do)
Track rod ends £7.50 a side
ARB bushes was about a tenner a pair
Nuts/bolts etc. from Pug approx £50

Hope this helps


Did this with S/H coilies with top mount and drop links so add your own prices there

What were the standard tyres out of interest?

I think I will be doing a full suspension refresh and put back to standard.

Standard tyres are deadly Pirelli P6000's iirc. I have some on the back of mine and it is scary at times. Really need to get round to swapping them round. For tyres I have Vredestein Sportrac 5's on the front and am very impressed with wet and dry grip. Stick to original 195/55 tyres anyway. Dunlop sport blue are meant to be good.

I went for a track setup and replaced everything rubber with metal, plus uprated all the springs/shocks for track kit and it is horrendous to drive on the road. Do not do that for a fast road setup. Solid rear mounts make everything sound like they are performing an etch-a-sketch onto your skull. Solid springs,30mm ARB and 24mm TB's make a cats eye seem like Harry Stamper is boring into your lower spine, for oil, on another planet.

I now leave that on a trailer whilst I tow it to tracks.

Upper and lower brace give less flex without the anal bleeding, a hybrid ARB gives better handling without sacrificing the comfort. 21mm TB's are a good compromise. That, with a full overhaul on suspension will give you what you want. Do not buy anything that replaces rubber for metal. It's not suited for road driving

Avoid cheapo wishbones/wishbone bushes, they're generally too soft from new and don't last 5 minutes.

Can anyone advice him what brand to go for at the minute??

I'm currently on conti premium contact 2 tyres and they seem pretty good,standard 195/55 of course.

My cars currently sitting lower on the offside rear so need to get under and work out whats causing it,may as well refresh some parts whilst I'm there.

From what I can see the front ARB is bent too so may replace that, are standard new units available or is it a case of good used?

The few iv done recently that have been lop sided has been rear shocks so be worth checking them!!

I used standard OE Pug dampers, springs, top mounts etc with Berlingo/Partner P-bushes (OE part from Pug dealer, direct replacement) and VTS P2 steering rack. I was driving it along a nice B-road around Salisbury Plain yesterday and it felt amazing. Firm riding but very supple at the same time, tyres in contact with the road at all times, not crashy or harsh. Direct steering and very confidence inspiring. The OE suspension was very well-judged. If the recommended Bilstein-Eibach combo is better than this, it would have to be pretty awesome.

Tyres, I've heard good things about the Contis, but I went for Dunlop Sport which are excellent, and the Dunlop Sport BluResponse are very highly rated too, all in original 195/55-15 size (and let us not forget Dunlop tyres were OE fitment on the Supermarine Spitfire).
