So after changing a radiator I am a bit pataniod about the coolent level inside the radiator.

I fill it up and then take the car out after the engine stops and cools down I look at the water level inside the radiator and it's about 1.5 litres short of being full.

Now I am not daft and I know when the engine and cool plenty gets hot it expands and thus the excess leaves via the top tube. But 1 litre was a little but much I thought.

Is this normal does any one know the usual level of coolent inside the radiator?

Thanks

Kev

Might be your rad cap, I had this with mine, leaked about the amount you say and no further.
It was leaking out through the little overflow pipe so I guess the pressure release valve in the cap was f@*ked..

Oh, and when you turned it off when the engine was up to temp, you could hear a hiss from the cap.

I shall check , I assumed that when the pressure increased through the temperature the excess escaped out the overflow pipe I take it the level should be full all the time?

Should it stay full to the brim then or will it lose some out the pressure valve in the cap and find it's own level a but lower??

In my experience, with the plastic rad caps, the atmospheric valve (let air in when cooling) flips over it's self cause the cap to hold absolutely no pressure but I needle used carefully to flip it back can save you so cash Thumbs up

I only use genuine caps on these, they seem to last much better than aftermarket cheaper alternatives.

Yeah, my Nissens rad came with one all those years ago when I bought it.

I test fitted it and didn't like the feel compared to standard so stayed with the standard one.

how the hell would you know stan, you never use the damned thing!

they're meant to be notchy to a certain extent, there's two stages to it.

It's not that sort of notchy. They dont have the smooth feel to a standard one. I dont have any issues with my nissens one. Plus it looks better.

I still take the cap off every now and again to make sure the coolant is still in there. Yes
