I'm looking for some track tyres, thinking A048 or Toyo 888R's so just looking for some opinions

How many track days can I expect out of a set of fronts?

What pressure should I be running in the dry, when the tyres are upto temperature

30 hot is where you want to be. Start around 26 cold and you won't be far away.

Life can vary, I've killed a pair in a day before, but other circuits and swapping them around can get 2-3 if your lucky.

Look at the Dunlop, only a touch more than R888 and they are a race carcious rather than road. Better in the wet and should last longer as they don't go "off" easy

What are the Dunlop's? Model?

Rears seem to be fine, but wrecking a set in one day sounds expensive! What about slicks, anyone got any experience?

I've heard good things about the Dunlop Direzzas from the guys I race with.

Ultimately I went with Federal 595 RSRs. They're not amazing but they're allowing me to keep up with cars that have 15bhp/ton more than me so for now they'll do. Bonus is they're only £65 a tyre so if you kill them in a day, oh well! I think they're a good learning tyre, that's what we're using them for. Once I get better at driving the car and understanding the setup better, then I can move to something more expensive.

That was my thinking. They're not going to offer you the same sort of performance that Direzzas, R888s or A048s will but they're so much cheaper that it just makes sense. If you run too much camber, kill a set of R888s you would be a bit upset, not the RSRs though.

What size are you looking for?

Yeah I got 2.something degree of camber so isn't to friendly on the tyres, I try to swap the front and rears so they do wear a bit better rather than just totalling the inner edge of the tyre.

Saying that the outside edge has a hiding on the track anyway.

Are they quite a square tyre as with a 205/50/16 A048 I get the tyre rubbing on the shock as it's right down. The only do the 195 with a 45/16 and not a 50/16. How far off the A048's are they then and also are they road legal. I couldn't find anything that says they are?

What about slicks, you ran them at all?

Yeah they were a bit cheaper but still came in at £120 a corner.

I found I can get 4x595RSR for 330 quid. Bargain if they are as good as Dan makes them to be. I know they aren't Yoko's but then I am learning so will be scrubbing them as I skid sideways into corners...

I run the RSRs in 205/45/16s and it's tight but I don't get any shock rubbing with 2.5 and 3 degrees front camber. That said my camber is coming from the top mount so if you've had the hubs machined then it would make sense if you're getting rubbing.

I rate them reasonably well. I'm sure other tyres will make us go faster and at some point I will try that but for now, these will do. You can see by the price that if you don't like them, kill them and move on to another tyre!

Are you just doing trackdays? If so then the 1 - 1.5 second a lap advantage by running Direzzas won't matter that much as you'll still be enjoying yourself.

Yeah I just like being faster than people who turn up in new cars they've spent thousands on and I'm up their are in my 15 year old French piece of s**t!

No I got top mounts for camber but the adjuster ring for the shock is all the way down so could cause an issue. Damn gaz shock being a nightmare!

GHA or Golds? I run Golds with 400lb 6inch springs and have no problems. Also have 4inch 40lb helper springs.

I was catch, overtake and pull away from an Aston Rapide at Brands if that's any help Razz In quali, we were 4th in class (of 7) and by far the lowest power to weight.

Golds on 415lb spring no helper, you all the way down on the adjuster? Mine has been machined on the bottom lock ring to run a bigger tyre. You running 16's?

There were people teaching during the track day and they said what I lack in skill I make up in commitment so I should be able to get quite fast times. I just want to start racing now, one track day and I have the bug

I'm also looking for Track Tyres .!
Spoke to miles today who raves about these ?

http://www.serviceandsport.com/tyres/pages/silverstoneftztyperr.php

Only problem is I need 17s ....how much !!!!
I'm running Toyo TIR Proxes at mo ...Miles mentioned I will need firmer side wall even in 45 profile for proper Track work...as already mentioned it seems Road Tyres just don't have good enough sidewalls

T1R's gave me no grip and they are torn to shreds after one track day. Luckily they were on the wheels when I bought them, I wouldn't like to have paid for them

How come you run 16s, is it just for brake clearance?

Yeah I run 330mm Brembo's, I'm going to be boosting it soon so need the extra stopping power on the track then. I'm pondering a different option brake wise so I can go down to 15" but this is where I am at the minute.

I stepped from T1Rs to RSRs and it made a big difference. I've done no machining to my shocks at all. If you are all the way down on the adjuster, just buy shorter springs and a helper spring. I'm definitely above half way down on mine.

16"s are brake clearance for me, only reason to do it IMO.

I see.

As dan says you want a shorter springs if you're struggling with clearance, most of the cars I've seen with golds on are running 6" springs for that reason.

6" for me, spring that is! Wink

Can probably get the complete set from Tweeks for under £150, if not there are plenty of other places to go for. I'm using 2.5" ID springs although apparently the official Gaz size is 2.25". I'm just running what came on them! Smile

They may be Golds, I know that my rear are GHA, but I bought them 2nd hand and I can't tell a massive difference by looking at them and can't find anything indicating a model. How would I tell??

I know that these shocks have been professionally setup though so don't want to get into the messing about with them, changing sprigs etc, although I may have to by the sound of it.

I'm not quite sure what professionally setup means? There's a knob for adjusting the damping and you can change the spring rate, not much to actually setup?

I run Faulkner springs, had no problems and I love the way the car handles. Admittedly I need to spend more time playing with damper settings but there's time yet Smile

Corner weighted to the car and damping rates set apparently...

But what do I know, I just bought the things hungover and bolted them on

Always a good plan Smile

Feel free to give the RSRs a go. If they're not for you then move to a different tyre when they are dead?
