Just a little thread, for the first time in 7 years I'm not driving a six as a daily. I have a v5 golf with every extra that I picked up for a bargain when I decided to break the highboost car.
Just wondered what other cars people have upgraded to? though the golf is very comfortable with heated seats and full leather it's so bloody boring just wondered if people had any thoughts on a similar car to a six with a bit of charachter and a buzz through the bends? top budget say 7k Thumbs up

Should be able to pick up a nice low mileage Premier Edition EP3 Type R for sub 7K Yes

Ive been looking at them, but cant afford that kind of budget at present.

Very 6-like but newer, and hopefully better built

Rallye hasnt been my daily drive for a while - know what your getting at though

had been driving a 306 1.9d and recently changed to c30 2 litre diesel which is quick enough for trip to and from work - wouldn't really want to compare the Volvo to the HB Rallye, its a comfortable car... im getting old now hah

I would put 7k in a civic. So much jap tax on them. It doesnt really do anything THAT much better than a 6 but cost you mucho dollar.
More power yes, But all the way up top, not so great steering though. Feels a bit detached.
Only honda vtec i would consider personally is a DC2 Jap one. Good luck finding one with no rust though
You can put in another grand an a half and get a lovely condiotion early and fairly low mileage e46 M3 coupe.

I know which i would go for
330hp vs 190 or so?
Rwd vs FWD
One is one of the most timeless cars ever made and the other is a breadvan
Also, DAT I-6 engine.

7k for a type R?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! f**k that!!!!!! They stay in the rear view until about 130!

I agree with Eliot te only vtec I would consider is a DC2. You can get a very fast fun car for 7k!!!!

Bulls**t.

Although I wouldn't spend £7k on an EP3, you should be able to get a low mileage Premier edition for closer to £5k.

I spent £7k on my DC5 and couldn't think of anything I'd prefer for the money.

Have you actually driven a Type R before? I hate when people make them out to be un-drivable unless you're in Vtec its utter bo***cks, the gearing is quite close which makes up for the slight lack of torque lower down.

Also I'm curious, why is it only the Jap DC2 you would consider? Looks?

Not really sure why you're comparing a CTR with an M3 either TBH....

To be fair I'm not going to spend 7k on a dc2 as there as old as a 6. civic type r not my cup of tea and 7k for one when you can pick them up for 3.5k!
Dc5 maybe but good luck getting one of them on budget!
M3 good choice have considered it but anymore recommendations opinions guys/gals

I hate to break it to you but an EP3 is so marginally faster it isn't worth it and in the real world the difference disappears. So this said type R is a good friend of mine so he can vouch that he is behind until 130.

I'll see if i can get hold of my mates go-pro and film it on private run way.

I didn't say spend 7k on an EP3, I said sub 7k and as benn said, really nice ones can be had for 5k, premier edition ones.

As I am due a work van any day now, I've been toying with the idea of a 'weekend' car.

And I've been asking myself do I really want to go back to a 306 with all the age related niggles and silly faults they can generate out of the blue.

As much as I LOVE the gti-6, do I really want to spend so much of my time maintaining them and spending hours under the bonnet fixing things that can and do go. And the answer is, I don't think so, I'm ready to try something else. Something of a similar vein, but different.

Yes, the same could be said of any car in terms of maintenance and the EP3 is knocking on a bit now also. But its something new to me, and its a more comfortable place to sit than a gti6 imo

The EP3 is very similar to the 6 in power delivery being a 6speed 2.0, but are a bit more refined, and newer.

I seriously doubt I would fall in love with an EP3 like I did my pugs. And I will defend the fact they are fantastic cars. And for the money, I may yet get another one. But for 5K, you wont find a nicer gti6-esqe/hatch than a premier edition ep3 really

I find this very hard to beleave as well as took my old ep3 to a quatre mile day and there was two 6,s there and I beat them quite comfortably 2 times each

I think you must have a super duper fast 6 Smile

I gave £7k for my DC5 and I reckon its one of the best in the country....I did get an absolute steal though.

I've had 2 6's and an EP3 Type R and although I'll admit the difference isn't huge, the EP3 was definitely a faster car (which isn't really surprising given that its more powerful and weighs less)

So yes either your friends CTR's got no Vtec yo! Or I think you are bulls**tting and going off the MPG claim in your signature I expect its more likely to be the latter.

I also wouldn't say the DC5 is a different animal altogether. Its just a bit faster and lot less refined than an EP3.

Quarter mile = reaction times and the ability to change gear well and at the right rpms? Dunno

Either way I've driven a few and raced a few and it's not until the high end they come past. My 6 does go well though Yes

Laugh my ass off so I'm bulls**tting about MPG to oh god you've sussed me out! My phone app must be completely wrong with its MPG calculations when it's asks me the mileage covered and the price of fuel. That figure was an average over a full tank with motorway driving.
