I'm about to start rebuilding my GTi6 spare engine and I'm wondering whats the best thing to go about cleaning it with, anyone done theirs on here. Also wondering about painting of it, are there high temp aerosol or 2k paints that people use or is it a brush style affair? I want to paint it something that oil will stand out against so thinking red or something along those lines?

Used this stuff called gunk the other day work wonders degreasing the engine

I painting my gloss black so bit of a epic fail but looks the nuts Smile

The paint I used is halford own engine paint and rated quite highly though I have heard over time the paint will fade/dis colour.

I cleaned the bare block with Jizer (degreaser) and then petrol. Yes

Once it was *completely* bone dry I masked EVERY hole up and then sprayed it with acid etch primer from Halfords. I gave it two coats of this and allowed to dry. Then I used Halfords black "engine" paint and sprayed about three coats onto it.

Came out looking perfect. Smile

I'd use a good etch primer (e.g. Bilt Hamber Etchweld) and then a high-temp black over the top. With all the heat etc the etch primer will give the best chance of the paint staying on.

Are there any 2k options about. I assume that will give the best results?

I'm sure there are, but I haven't used any. I repainted the cam cover on an old Audi I had in the 1990s with one-pack satin black enamel (not high-temp paint) and it was still looking great years later.

Yeah but cam covers don't get up to the temo of the block so I'm still on the hunt. I've googled it to no avail. My mate who's a sprayer is looking into it as well

stripped down properly, cleaned and wire wheeled, steamed off etc, hammerite hammered black for the block and the red is heat resistant hammerite again. cam covers in a VHT silver, everything else either powdercoated or shotblasted and painted

Can't go wrong with a blast over with brake cleaner IMO. I found it performed better than gunk.

Looks very good, I'm going for a colour so I can see any oil leaks. thinking of just aluminium, it looks standard but painting it should help with keeping it clean
