Morning All,

So on my way to work today after showing no signs of fading out the alternator went and cut all power to my car just as I was about to pull on to the A61 (Sheffield). Car obviously wouldn't start back up etc and ignorant motorists wouldn't help me push it out of the way.

Anyways - Which Do people recommend, I can see a few options on Euro Car Parts however some of them have £42 and £84 surcharges.... Is this normal??

The options on ECP are:

Bosch:
http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Peugeot_306_2.0_1999/p/car-parts/car-electrics-and-car-lighting/electrical/alternator/?401545160&1&6a86423892dd0418627fd14d2fcc5649fbbdc809&000012

Lucas:
http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Peugeot_306_2.0_1999/p/car-parts/car-electrics-and-car-lighting/electrical/alternator/?401545161&1&bcec3e23fb55c114630191dfd0636ea75b422876&000012

RTX:

There are a couple of cheaper Bosch and Lucas Alternators on the site but I am not too sure what the differences are. Any recommendations...?

Its a V reg (1999) GTi6. The guy from the AA advised taking the radiator off or lifting the manifold out. Any suggestions on which is easiest?

Valeo or Bosch are standard. You only get a years warrenty with them all anyway as a rule just go for a decent make. However all the different ones on the site will be because they don't usually know the amp rating of the alternator on the car so they give a choice of several.

Just go for a decent brand and you'll be fine.

Cheers - but at those prices its a toss up whether I take it off the road and get a cheap diesel for now Sad especially when I have spent so much on it this year already and it still needs bits of work doing....

Will probably cost me more to get a cheap decent diesel than it would to repair all the faults. But then at least I have the economy to help me save to get the 6 back up to scratch maybe.

Going to have to have a good think about it.

Still looking at Alternators...

Peugeot havent responded to me about pricing up a standard Valeo... So Im still looking at Euro Car Parts...

I am told that the standard ampage is 90... However the ones on ECP are 95 or 80...

Without sounding too stupid - would this cause any issues and is it best to go higher or lower?

WOW just got my quote back from Robins and Day (Peugeot Dealers):

'This part is not in stock anywhere and would have to come from France ( if they have stock )
The price would be £362.52 Inv vat with no return and payment before ordering'

I think I will stick with the Bosch from ECP!

Jeffers - I have thought of that.... m waiting a quote back etc but the thing is I need it this weekend as Im car-less without it and work standard mon-fri then got to drive to Lytham-st-annes in it next weekend so im kinda in a rush.

Thanks Pete - but I kinda need it today/ tomorrow! Sad

Luckily Ive found one for £85+vat for a 120a alternator so going to give that a go I think - the surcharge is only 5 quid so I may use mine as a spare to get refurbed just in case.

So I picked up my new alternator and set about being towed from my flat down to our make shift garage for the day:

As it was raining we had to improvise using an old rabbit run and the top from a gazebo:

Somebody told us the best way to change the alternator would be to take the manifold out.... So we set about undoing all the screws/ bolts etc:

Keeping an Hammer handy just in case:

About 3 hours later we finally located and unscrewed all the bolts and could finally list the manifold out enough to move to the side:

Oh joy - looks like I need a new Gasket too! and nowhere has any instock for a couple of days:

Time to take the PAS pump out:

another oh joy - After getting the PAS out of the way we start taking the aux belt off and see that it pretty much has a slice across the full width which seems very odd thing to happen:

Finally got the old Alternator out the dirty b!tch:

And the new Alternator in place:

A quick run to Bullseye to get a new aux cable and everything is quickly put back in place waiting the new gasket to arrive:

Moral of the story - don't listen to people telling you taking the manifold out is the easiest way! haha

Hopefully once I've picked the new Gasket up and we have it all fitter it will come back to life.

Three hours to get the manifold off?

I guess if you've never removed one before, but really it's a half hour job including a cuppa.
You should have ordered a new gasket when you bought the alternator, that way it could have been completed in one day. Smile

I was exaggerating about the 3 hours just felt like it fumbling around trying to feel for them all. I have the gasket now so tomorrow should be putting it back together.

Well its all back together and fingers crossed working fine so far! Infact its working even better than usual.

We jump started the car and left it running to get some charge back in the battery and it got pretty hot and the fans kicked in about 3/4's and cooled it back down to half. Never has this happened before.

Also so far ive done about 30/40 miles in the car and the speedo has worked the whole way! Usually it cuts in and out.

I haven't even fitted my new fans or speed sensor yet.... Hopefully unplugging just about all the cables and sensors around the manifold and reconnecting them has done so good.

Lets see how long it lasts for!
