Hi all,
some of you may have noticed my rallye in the for sale section the other week before I pulled the add.
Thing is I just cant decide what to do, I love the rallye but I quite fancy something with a few mod cons and a bit modernised.
civic type r is my thinking.
so do I sell and go jap
or
keep it and save for cams etc

digress....

To digress or to discuss, that is the question.

Sell and buy something modern.

Went from pug to CTR, and now back to pug.

How many ctrs do you see compared to rallyes ??

I think if you're going to sell up then at least go for something properly different. Going for a CTR just doesn't make sense to me, yes I'd like one but what's the point? It's just so similar.

Obviously that opens up the question of what to replace it with but I'd love to get something rwd and it's amazing what you can get for your money on pistonheads. I'd love something like a 200sx, an M3 or 330ci or an Evo and they can be had for really reasonable money.

Depends what you want out of the car? Ctr's are a great car but performance wise are not a million miles away from the pug but I'd say a better place to sit in on a daily basis but vtec is a odd thing some love it and some find it tiresome.

As above if it's a change I'd opt for something a bit more different but I'm kinda in the same boat hopefully looking to get something next year and was adamant I would get something different but looking into the upkeep of m3's and evos etc for a toy I may end up back with a 6

330ci would be nice but I live in the sticks. Getting out the village in winter wouldn't happen.
Ctr being similar is kinda the point. Electric, air conditioning, etc 200bhp. But yeah you're right not exclusive.

Ive been in your shoes a few times... you get that itch for a change... make the change and in my experience's always miss the Rallye!

Ive never owned a Type R, but a mate had an EP3 and another has an FN2. I preferred the EP3 from the two. It felt quicker (maybe because the newer car was more refined?) The engines sound immense in VTEC Yo... But in both cars I found the ride quality non existent... on any thing other than a totally smooth surface they crash and bang horribly. The steering feel aint much cop either.

This is when you realise how nice a well sorted Rallye is, firm but compliant. As for speed, I found the EP3 was quicker than the Rallye, albeit not by much.

I had a car and car conversions mag back in the day where they timed a EP3 CTR vs a Rallye around a track... and the Rallye just nudged it (I remember the writer saying he'd melted the Rallye's tyres and cooked his brakes in the process but loved the Rallye all the more as he felt he'd 'earned' the victory... lol)

This sums it for me, i think the Rallye is a more rewarding car, is rarer, rawer and I personally like having wind up windows etc as it is memories of a bygone era!

If you fancy a change go for it mate... you can always come back and bag yourself another Rallye!

Yeah I know what you mean. This is ny third 306 second rallye. I do fancy a change but my rallye is so clean and tight i would struggle to find another. Bordem and ebay are a terrible combo

I had a premier edition EP3 which I sold earlier this year. Absolutely loved the car. I spent a bit of money and lowered it on eibach with adjustable camber arms and had a fast road setup done on it, also put 8J enkeis from an Evo 9 and it was awesome.

If you've got the money and don't mind an older car the DC5 is also a good bet. Much more hardcore than an EP3 but there less common.

As much as I like the type r they are like marmite tho so you'll just have to have a go in one and see what you think. I will agree with gywn about the ride quality it wasn't great in the EP3 and is horrific in the DC5.

My old EP3

Looks lovely that. Most dc5 are high miles now. My budget would be what ever I got for the rallye

Erm £2100/2200 could probably put a couple of hundred onto this for something new.
Saab 9-3 aero is good money but mu last saab as fast and comfortable as it was it did kinda bore me. What are clios like to live with and on a motorway

I don't think you'd get the example of TypeR you'd be content with at that price personally.

A Clio is a fair bit smaller, brilliant on fuel (46mpg indicated yesterday on a 30 mile motorway run) but more fiddly to work with in comparison as they appear to make things over complicated. Cambelt/dephaser pulley changes are expensive in comparison to your Rallye for example.

If you bought a Rallye over a '6 intentionally, you'd be best placed in a 172 Cup in my opinion.

Hmm your probably right. I got the rallye as was going to do production class hill climbing so go a light weight starting point. But plans changed. Are the clios comfy and not revving too high on a motorway then?

Agreed with Dan. If it was me I wouldn't fancy a £2500 CTR

I used to have a 182, brilliant on fuel, good fun and full of toys, but the build quality is shocking and the interior is horrible - I'd rather have a decent 6/ rallye.

If I were you I'd keep the rallye.

My Cup has the poverty looking cloth seats but they are actually very comforable. The driving position for me at 6'3ish is fine. The gearstick is a bit too far over to the right, but nothing you can't live with. Not too high revving no. You will find yourself going from 70 to 100 a lot as they pull really well at high revs.

I don't dislike the interior. Stepping from the Clio into the HDi you really do see how dated th 306 dash is. Build quality is, well it's just French. RenaultSport did actually think about the Cups and make some changes over the 'full fat' versions, rather than where Peugeot gave you less with a Rallye to save weight and that's it. The Cup had the weight savings, and some geometry differences, no ABS and some aestehic styling more favourable than Rallye stripes and no fogs.

They are very good value IMO. I'm getting rid of mine in the new year as it's past it's best and not worth spending money on compared to its value. I will probably end up replacing it with another purely due to the fact they are so reasonably priced.

A good friend of mine has got a "full fat" 182 but with cup suspension. He paid a fair bit more than 2200 for it though. It's a good car and having modern features like cruise control and xenons is certainly nice.

One thing I will say is that although the interior is more modern, it is a fair bit smaller. I wouldn't go as far as cramped, but inside it is definitely a smaller car than the 306, both in terms of passenger room and boot space. This isn't necessarily a problem, but it is worth thinking about. The clio is a smaller car on the inside, however they have utilised the interior space well to stop it from feeling cramped.

I can't really speak for the cup but having owned an 04 plate 182 full fat version I would rather have the Gti-6 any day. The only thing better about the Clio was the fuel consumption. Interior was god awful, it sounded s**te and I kept forgetting to turn the traction control off which meant it nearly killed me on several roundabouts. Went from a 306 to a Clio and back to a 306 in quite a short space of time. Steering lacked the feel of the pug too. Oh, and it's TINY inside!

    All IMO of course Smile

size don't bother me too much, as long as I can get my shotgun in, or a couple of suit cases in for the odd weekend away.
my mrs has a c2 vts, fun to drive(chuckable/nippy) but build quality is s**t and gearbox is a pudding bowl and you tend to push peddles down(like a van) rather than away like you should.
not such a fan of the way the electric power steering loads up, feels un natural .

are they like this or much better?
