I had a rotrex failure just last month, exactly the same loud whine which slowly got louder and louder, then had no boost at all, I later found out the output shaft had snapped and compressor wheel was no longer spinning correctly but the charger was not seized. I got a replacement from TTS last weekend at a discounted price, but I'm disappointed that it only lasted 6000 mile with normal use, no track days etc

They are definitely an 80mm diameter pulley. Yes

As for failing, I still stand by the fact they need to be warmed up very gently and let rest after use before switching off. Yes

That's what happened to one of my customers units, he is an older chap in his 60s but on his way back from Belgium it let go.

His had done circa 25k

One thing i noticed fitting the new charger, the min and max oil level on the dip sticks are different, the darker one is in the new kit

This is making me worry about buying a new one again! That looks shocking, Kev. I'd urge you to email Rotrex direct if you haven't already because they need to know about this and should really be giving answers. I received and email back from them today but need a serial number from the charger for them to look into it. I think we want to get temperature sensors installed ASAP.

Another thing that concerns me is impeller speeds. The C30-94 is rated for 100,000 rpm. Based on a rev limit of 7500 on the engine:

127mm crank pulley / 85 mm charger pulley gives 106,000rpm
127mm crank pulley / 80 mm charger pulley gives 113,000rpm

Worrying?

One style of the dip sticks is the wrong measurements, mine was overfilled but the stick said it was fine, I did ask rick about it.

I mentioned on a different thread that rotrex changed the min and max levels and this is shown on the pdf file, they lowered the levels due to lots of people getting fluid spilling out of the top, in reality over filling wouldn't have caused any issues

I sent an email to Rotrex Direct but got no reply, so got in touch with Lynx, and facebooked TTS who sorted me out with a replacement, Richard @TTS did say they have seen a few similar failures,

When you say sorted you out how much did you end up paying for the replacement charger if you don't mind me asking

Good question Jamie - I can't see them allowing a huge discount as they wouldn't make any money, especially as the unit isn't under warranty.

Also to clarify - the oil cooler for the C38 series is the same size as the one for the C30 series, they're identical. Yes

How would anyone go about fitting a fan to it, the dimensions don't really suit it do they? They would end up being something like you get on a PC

Also there is the risk of overcooler then and the oil too cool. It would need a temp sensor to kick the fans in

Yeah, it would only ever be any good in traffic and then at those times the oil isn't being worked hard anyway.

Yeah that's a point, the only time it will be boiling is if you are gunning it, which means there is plenty of air going past the radiator. Is there is a thermostat in the charger to regulate oil flow then?

You can buy small fans too...
If we found out the min temp and had an oil temp gauge installed you could just have the fan on a switch! I would imagine that mine got a bit hot on the track day I did the other weekend!

Certainly something to look into before I fit it all to the dimma :-)

I didn't think that you could get them that small, just checked Spal. 75 quid for 1 x 4" one and your going to need two for the area. Plus wiring and sensor your talking £200. But then it's cheaper than a new charger. Someone fit a stat to their charger so we can see what's going on here!
