My parents have just been rear ended and the guy has obviously owned up etc so no probs there.

Question is, if the car is written off (which is likely) how long do you get a rental car for (that his ins are paying for according to ours) before you find another car? I can't see them giving you one until you actually get a replacement as that can take months some times.

Also, anything else worth doing/watching out for when a car is written off and it's their fault? Will our ins give a good payout for it and then go after his or does his ins decide how much its worth?

not true stan. I have been in a similar situation. It 100% depends on the people who youre insured with. Admiral will NOT give you a courtesy car to drive if your car is written off. they will offer you the services of a company called Albany Assurance, who are a complete bunch of knobbers. google them, they charger too much for hire cars, insurers of the other person can decline to pay under the prices being unfair. Albany can then claim the funds direct from you.

the best thing to do is sit and wait, see if the other drivers company ring you and offer you a courtesy car (if they agree it is their drivers fault) as soon as they do, then tell them you want to speak to your insurance first, and just double check with them that they're happy for this to happen. First hand experience of this.

Always go through the third parties insurance especially if it is their fault!

Yeah alot depends the insurance company's they all work differently
But if they do get a curtsy car then they will have the use of that car until they are paid out
At the agreed sum

Jeez that's a good old whack, thing is though I would say the car is still worth quite a bit so may be repairable, hope the folks are ok.

I'm presuming the boots creased?
Looks like the chassis will be damaged too
I very much doubt that'll be put back on the road,..
The way it's looked at is if the cost of the repair is less than 60% of the value of the car
Then it'll be fixed if not then there written off cat C/D

There should be no question of fault if your hit in the rear
Then the insurance will rule in your favour

When I was involved in an accident I was given a hire car which was payed for by the third party's insurance. I had the car until I was payed out for my car.

Had the exact same thing happen to me 3 weeks ago.
Obviously the 6 was written off, and I too have dealt with/am dealing with Albany Assistance.
My insurers are Elephant.

I very much doubt that will be put back on the road Sad

Hope your parents are ok, its fairly unpleasant being hit with that force - was it a lorry?

The whole process is not in anyway transparent really. If its a first time claim its difficult to find out what on earth is going on.

I had a hire car for 7 days, the way I understand it you can have the car for as long as it takes for you to get a replacement car OR you get a settlement payout for your damaged vehicle.

I wasn't really happy driving around in a 61 plate car that I was liable for so I sent it back asap.

Anything worth making sure of when picking it up? Any paperwork or checks that can be done to make sure its spot on?

I reckon it will be ok, once the bumper and tailgates taken off the damage won't look as bad

Although saying that I'd be p**sed off it's not a write off

Rich providing it hasn't creased the rear quarters at all, it will be a fairly simple repair. new tailgate, bumper, rear valance and probably a few interior plastics looking at that and pull out the boot floor.

Only thing id check is the panel gaps are even (no panels raised past others) and the boot lid opens and closes fine.
Don't forget you have a 3 year warranty on that work assuming they are using one of the insurers approved repair shops so over a period of time, check for even tyre wear as well.

    I would have to know that garages work to trust them hahahahahaha

    My 306 estate was written off 2 weeks ago by an old twat driving straight in front of me as I approached a junction. He admitted fault straight away and reported the accident the same evening to insurers etc. I got a courtesy car the next day (paid for by my side but claimed back from his side)

    their policy is that you keep the car until the vehicle is repaired or if its a write off (which it was in my case) you are allowe to keep the car for 7 days after the day they post the cheque out to you.

    Only thing I have to do is attempt to reclaim the cost of recovery of the vehicle from the accident site to my work.

    You 100% sure on that? With an insurance approved bodyshop I would have thought a year would have been more likely. Insurers don't want the liability hanging over them years after an accident. With most other GI it's a year warranty on any insurer approved repair network.
