hey guys just a quick on my 6. it makes a whining noise when I accelerate and change gear I put it down to the aux belt being to tight but I had a play and it still makes the noise so i'm now heading toward the water pump cause i blew the head gasket due to a water hose coming loose and plopped off so when i took it for skimming also did pressure and vac test. i didn't change the water pump could this the case or am i heading in the wrong direction im confused lol?Dunno

cheers

Could be the auxiliary belt tensioner bearing?

Rev the car out of gear, if it does not make the noise then its prob the gearbox.
If it still makes the noise, see below.

Why would you not do this?? Dunno

Iirc you can not over tighten the belt as its on a auto tension pulley.

Its most likely the tensioner bearing, alt bearing, aircon bearing or powersteering pump bearing.

Either that or when you replaced the aux belt ( if you did ) you may have got one thats to short Dunno

I thought it was the rule that everyone changed the pump when doing the belt? You've done the hard part in getting that far, it's just a few more bolts and it's there. It's also a good reason to change the coolant

well I haven't got a air con unit in, I took that out. I had to weld two steel plates with a pulley and bolted it to the brackets where the air con unit would have been to copy the way the belt runs. and yes I changed the belt but i didn't change the water pump out of the fact i totally forgot i know stupid me :/ ill replace all the bearing if it isn't them least they have new ones on wont hurt lol just a bit confused at the moment guys! Confused

You know you could have just run a rallye belt and tensioner right. No need for makeshift bracketry.

Well either the belt is to short of the bearing's are going in one of the above mentioned.

**edit**

Or the cam belt is to tight but i doubt it would whine or the cambelt is rubbing on the cambelt cover. This is a common problem.

You can test this by lightly pressing on the cover while the engine is running.
