Just seen the stats for the new Golf R, 296BHP/280lbs of torque and you can put all the power to the rear wheels if you so choose Smile I know it will have a nice price tag on it but that sounds like it could be fun to drive. Not as fast as when (if) I ever boost my 6 LOL

weighs two tons, same as all new cars, will feel slow, cost lots, but apparently use a lot less fuel than older cars.

0-62 in 4.9 seconds, so I doubt it'll feel slow.

It doesn't. That will have been the gross weight, which is the maximum weight the vehicle can me. The current 220bhp GTi's are mid-1300kgs unladen weight depending on transmission and options.

Same mistake that Mei made above regarding the weight.

Hot hatches should weigh under 1200 kg at the most imo!

What Mei says is generally gospel so factor that in what we can read on Google that basically can't be trusted.

I know all new cars are 2 T, don't you?

The Mk6 had a curb weight of 1446, so I can't imagine it being much more. Surprised that VW don't do a "Rallye/Cup/any other lightweight" version, Porsche love to do it and charge more. I bet that they could easily shave off 100kg with the amount of gear that goes into them

Haldex is cr@p anyway, it is not a real 4WD system, it uses wet clutches to shuffle power to the rear wheels when sensors detect slip at the front, and it has its own ECU which can and does fail, for plenty of ££££ bills to the unlucky owner. Since electronics have long since been the most likely thing to break on a car why do manufacturers insist on putting more of them into cars when purely mechanical tech (e.g. FWD with Torsen or ATB diff) delivers the necessary result. The Haldex fluid and filter needs regular changing too, and clutches, even wet ones, don't last for ever, so why add a couple more for little result. In contrast the old Audi quattro system gave true 4WD, had a mechanical diff (Torsen on later versions), and rarely if ever went wrong - and was a superior driving experience.

I weighed in my B5 Passat estate for scrap, with a spare tailgate and loads of junk in the boot at 1380kg. That felt pretty heavy to me. Its amazing what they can do with controls and dampers to make a car Feel light these days though. Would have thought the extra weight in new cars is noticed when you really press on and notice how the brakes and tyres melt. Think the Haldex 4wd system was made for skiing trips to the Alps, not hot hatches.

I don't think its that bad it certainly puts the power down easier than 2WD although i agree with what your getting at. You're putting all that weight of a 4WD system in so why not have a proper 4WD system/

Every car i see round mine is a golf! I'm sure as said it will be very capable and probably quite rapid but will it be a fun drive! Plus would i spend 30k on a new hatchback the answers a resounding no!

Rich E fails to see the metaphoric exaggeration of the weights LOL

They should rename the polo as the golf, but even that is so much bigger than old golfs!

Never driven a Golf R, but have had one too many passengers rides on a fully spec'd brand new Golf Edition 35 and I was highly impressed with it's handling at high speeds in the b roads in both dry and wet conditions.

Naturally this is a Peugeot forum so bias is expected and so does individual opinions.

Besides I'm not even sure, why this post had to exist on General and not on Off Topic?

M)k5 golf GTI's edition 30 are insane fast cars. Mk6 R is also a very nice car, I have driven both an can say both are silly fast. My mate's mk 5 made 299ps/BHP when we went on the dyno my Lb 6 only made 240 and his golf only has a good remap. The R I have driven was bog standard with the Dsg box and felt some what faster than my 6. We never go to try a side by side run unfortunately, but he sold it a few weeks ago and got a A1 Quattro Cool

He compared it with his 500 hp ZX16V.
