Looking to get a diesel runabout for the next year or so. Don't want to spend more than £1500. Must be reliable and average 40+ on a local commute, stop start traffic. To give an idea, I usually average 21-22 MPG in the Rallye. Had enough of using it as a daily.

Any suggestions other than a HDi? The only Golf which would be economical enough is the standard 90bhp ones, and they look dog s**t so not too keen on them either.

Sounds like you need a smaller engined petrol, not a diesel. We have a 1.6 Meganesport which does 90% town roads and gives 40mpg. No Diesel engine problems and cheaper fuel.

Yep get a HDi and understand the true meaning of hot hatch ownership.

You'll soon end up like me and Rikky - popping a shoot of bambo down the fuel filler acting as a dipstick on a bi weekly basis due to not comprehending how on earth than fuel gauge can be accurate yet outperform a '6.

I know these modern diesels are rather s**te with the DPFs, EGRs etc. The older ones would be more reliable I would have thought. That's my reason for not spending too much, won't be that bothered if it goes wrong.

Surely a HDi would be more economical than a 1.6?

Any diesel will be far bette in traffic than any petrol engine unless its microscopic. Petrol engines have to run a stoichiometric mixture of 14.7 parts air to one part fuel in order to comply with emissions standards by burning all the petrol completely.

Diesels on tickover however run up to 100-1 as they use all the volume of air in the cylinders all the time instead of vacuume like a petrol and only inject enough diesel to tick over.

Get a decent 306 HDi like mine get it remapped to 125bhp job done. Worst I ever get is over 40mpg and on a motorway run it does 55mpg.

It's one of those things where you have to get a good balance of engine size and fuel type to suit your needs, environment and driving style. I would never buy a diesel purely for town needs but if I had a good mixture with motorways and A roads then I would consider it. I had a 320d that gave up to 64mpg on a motorway but in town it was in the 30's so overall it wasn't far off the 1.6 petrol combined, just with more expensive fuel. At £1500 though it could really go either way, a reliable diesel might be more efficient but it could let you down as much as any car of that age in repairs or parts failures.

I agree that the older diesels sound like they're more reliable at higher mileages as opposed to the modern ones which seem to be very expensive to run, especially when the DPF needs replacing.

That's probably all well and true in theory but in reality traffic moves from standstill up to 30mph and then back down again over and over and so on. It's not about being at standstill and ticking over which is why I believe a smaller n/a engine is better around town than a 1.9/2.0 turbo diesel. It's worked out better from personal experience and that of others.

You mean you want my HDi for the wife lol, having second thoughts about selling it at the minute though. I could always find a cheap one and do it up, go some cash put buy at the minute for something but haven't decided what yet....

DPF and EGR deletes are avail for most cars.

Can't understand people having DPF's regenerated when its as cheap to remove and get it removed from ecuDunno

Get caught with a car and the dpf deleted is an offence, chances are your unlikely to get caught but theres always that chance.

I'm sure it's the same for having a decat which plenty of people on here do.

Ian makes a good point about diesels in town. Just spoke to my dad who is a driving instructor (doing pretty much the same driving as I would be). He averages 37 in a modern 1.6 diesel.

Still better than the Rallye like. Agreed that a smaller petrol engine maybe the best choice but they are so lifeless

Just checked the car, it says 42.1mpg and it is actually a very accurate gauge. I have heard of people with Clio 182's who get into mid 40's on average but I can't confirm that.

ask the rat, but I have also heard the same, which sounds about right as its a 1 ton 2.0 with VVT, my agricultural 80's 8 valver with a cam can do 40mpg on a run, but averages 34-35 on the same commute that a C5 hdi did 43 on, half town and lane half dual carriageway driving, so doesn't make sense to me to have a diesel.

    Or Clio 1.5 DCi / 206 1.4 HDi.
We're about to get one of these for a commuting slag to prevent necessary miles/cost in the D5.
